Thread: Fitting a Recoil Pad.

I have a Limbsaver grind to fit recoil pad I need to fit. I have never done this so have a few questions? How do I determine the correct length of pull required? Will Devcon steel epoxy be adequate for gluing it to my stock? Stock is a HighTech Specialties so has a foam fill wrapped in Fibreglass. Also what is the best way to grind it? Can I use a household belt sander with 120grit then finish by hand with 240 or something? I think that is all I have for now.

Normie, I wish I could verbally describe this to you but it isn't that easy to describe!
This is a job that is definitely easier to show you How-To do it, than describe but here goes;

First off I work out the LOP, cut the stock to suit.
I then Hand Sand the base of the pad, to ensure it is flat and this also helps to give the epoxy to adhere to the pad.
I then put two layers of 25mm wide masking tape around the stock to stop the excess epoxy from adhering to the sides of the stock.
The masking tape also helps protect the stock later on, when you grind down the pad.
I then mix up enough epoxy beading compound (you can also try 24 Hour Araldite!), and apply it to the stock end.
I then position the pad onto the stock and once I have it in place I then use a couple of strips of masking tape, to hold it in place.
Then set the stock aside until the epoxy has cured (48 plus hours).

Regardless of what you use to grind the pad, you will need a safety glasses and a face mask to protect your lungs!
Generally, most people use a Linisher (or Belt Linisher), to grind off the excess of the unwanted recoil pad.
I start with an 80 grit belt to remove most of the material and then finish with a warn out 200 grit belt.
I then use a sanding block and 320 grit emery paper, to achieve the final blend of the pad to the stock profile

I rough mine off with a disk grinder but a little care is needed, then as homer does with masking tape, i wrap the various grades of wet and dry around a file.Freezing it makes getting a good finish a bit easier.

Homer with the HighTech do you glue the pad directly onto the exposed foam or put down a layer of epoxy to seal it first.

After I have calculated the LOP, I then mark out and cut the HTS stock to the correct length.
I then mix up an amount of epoxy and spread it thinly, across the entire butt area of the stock.
I then position the pre-prepared recoil pad and hold it in place with some masking tape.
