    I have owned a .270 before. Have looked at a nice .243 Ruger but from what I've heard might be a bit on the light calibre side of things.

    308 is sounding good.

    270 , 6.5 x 55 , 308

    If this is to be a hunting rifle then my personal pick would be the 270 , there is a reason why it's highly regarded worldwide as a hunting round .
    If your going to do a lot of shooting at the range as well as hunting get the 308 .
    If your happy to do everything in a traditional , understated , efficient way , then get the 6.5 x 55 .

    What you going to use it for ??

    223 is great entry rimfire
    Cheap to run
    Good for kids
    A killer

    223 would do the job assuming you can shoot straight.

    Get a faster barrel twist rate so you can shoot heavier rounds easily. 1:8.

    Nice a cheap to run and very versatile.
