    Holland & Holland shotgun.

This just sold after being passed in twice.

    $1210 NZD

I inspected this gun when I was in Stockholm,it was in decent condition and well worth the price. The impending lead ban in Europe and the unpopularity of old guns mean there are going to be some mega bargains coming up over the next five years or so.

10 years ago this gun would have made probably £3000,now it sold for £650.

    Yes very interesting

You don't buy vintage guns as an investment anymore

Pay what you can for things you like and don't be surprised if you can't sell the for half what you paid when you do need to sell

Incredible really , you would think that high end stuff they would export to the U.S , they still pay good money for the right stuff

They list high end stuff for good money.
But do they get good money for it ?

I know a lot about a certain kind of rifle and watch the market world wide.
See the same item on different web platforms and not selling for the silly prices.

Then people in NZ see what they have in U.S. for silly price and not selling.
So they double the price for the exchange rate and then end up with "double silly in $NZ "

The states is saturated, has been for a good while apparently. There is always a market for the hugely expensive stuff, its everything else that's suffering.

If too much of this cheap stuff comes onto the market, then the £10-£15K huns halve in value too. You can afford to cut up a lot of cheap guns to keep your high ticket stuff from depreciation.

    For a while anyhow.

Really hard for older guys to accept that gun values won't continue to increase faster than inflation.

I have a few very nice vintage rifles available to buy from semi willing owners.
But they are still convinced that they can compound the interest forward on what they paid for it 10 or 20 years ago.

Markets change all the time and trends in collecting change also.
The market might come back for what these guys have but have they got time to wait ?

I recently brought a dirty rusty, but very desirable single shot 500 3" BPE single shot rifle at auction.
    $1200 NZ
There is currently a rifle in the exact same model available in NZ at $8000 NZ
It is a 450 BPE which is a slightly less desirable cal because the 500 holds a premium ( usually the biggest calibers are less common and more desirable ) and it is also fully refinished, which also doesn't enhance the value.

So there is a disconnect between the vendors having owned for years and never conceiving taking a loss and the realistic state of the market

There is also a disconnect between what the owner paid for a new high end item ,the used market and the current cost of the new high end item.

There are a few Rigby "Highland stalkers" that have been on the market sporadically for years here. The owners want somewhere between what they paid a decade ago and the new price which is pure fantasy.

    New £16K
    Asking £14K
    Cost £9K
Actual value £3-5K more if its as new in case with accoutrements.

Things sell for the right price in any market, its the market that sets the price.Sadly for a new generation of shooters a Rigby/Greener/Mauser is just an "old fashioned gun".
