    Question Home Made AR15 Stocks

Hi everyone, with the new AR15 pistol grip law change in December I was wonder if you are allowed to make your own stock? And if you do, do you have to get it approved by the police? I have just noticed websites selling the new A-CAT stocks say they are “Police approved”.
I understand you are not allowed to just bolt a metal bar between the base of the pistol grip and the stock.
But can it be done, if it’s done properly, which my understanding is:
    • The grip is connected to the stock at two points, one at the top and one from the base of the grip.
    • The connection is permanently connected to the grip and stock (i.e. not removable).
Are there any other criteria it has to meet, like:
    • The connection between the base of the grip and the stock must be a certain thickness?
    • The connection point must take up a certain area of the stock?
    • The connection must be made of a certain material?

There's no reason why not. Approval can only come after it's finished. Just take cues from the popular ones and go for it

There is a lot of f**king around to make your own thumbhole stock for an AR.
Key issues, weight, strength, ability to use the safety properly with your thumb, destroying the selector spring when removing a thumbhole grip with attached grip and making sure the stock screw doesn't extend too far into the end of the buffer tube.

If you think you can do a better job than Spearmags, Guncity or another option, go ahead. There will be plenty of people keen to buy one from you, so some $ to be made.

Glu, when are we going to see your prototype stock?

We have some out there but we backed of when the spear mag stock was being made and started making stocks to fit the 308 rifles but I am getting calls every day about our stock and am looking at a new machine which will help with production . It is just finding the time to get back into building them .
The stocks were just something we did on the side and have our main production to keep going first hopefully I will get another batch of 223 ones out in a couple weeks when our main production slows down and full time staff onto them in a few weeks.

The police can't actually approve or disapprove a stock, so that's a moot point. Basically if you don't have a pistol grip, as defined by the Governor General, it's A cat.

    Interpretation

    (1) In this order, unless the context otherwise requires,—

free-standing grip, in relation to a firearm, means a grip that,—

    (a) is designed to be gripped by the whole or most of the trigger hand of a person firing the firearm; and

    (b) is (if any trigger guard is disregarded) structurally connected to the firearm at only one point; and

    (c) when deployed, protrudes from the firearm in a direction that is closer to being perpendicular to the barrel than to being parallel to it; and

    (d) is neither—

    (i) a thumb-hole stock; nor

(ii) a stock of the type commonly described as a Dragunov stock or Dragunov-style stock

This is the definition of a pistol grip taken of the police website so if the stock does not fit the above description it does not have a pistol grip so is fine .

I can not find anything to say if a stock is legal or if a stock is not legal it just must not be a pistol grip as defined above. You could put an A2 stock on and no grip if that is what you want .

So a pistol grip attached to an AR15 at 2 points is not a pistol grip. Drill and tap a second hole with a second bolt and have fun with your AO

GLU - I get quite a few enquiries regarding 308 stocks. I will push them your way.

    Thanks everyone,

My idea is to make a stock out of my existing pistol grip and a fixed version of the collapsible stock. I was going to create a frame between the two and then fibreglass it all together (so it was is not removable).

I just wanted to check what the legal requirements were before I even started looking into the logistics of it.
