How to clean my Marlin 795 .22 SA

    Hey guys,

As i've explained before im new to the scene and I dont really have anyone to show me how things are done so i might ask some real basic dumb questions.

I have just got a Marlin 795 .22 SA (managed to do a trade for a dog kennel i had).

Now my question is how do i clean it? i got a copper brush thing to fit onto my cleaning kit that i bought for my 7mm 08. But when the guy at HnF was showing me how to clean the 7mm08 he said to only run patches and brush from the breach end to the rifle tip, so my problem is it would appear you have to go the other way on this Marlin 795. Also the kit didnt come with any gun oil, do i need to buy this or is there a common oil you can use instead? Also reading up on here people say yo should really only clean the barrel on a .22 every few hundred rounds but the action should be cleaned every shooting. Is cleaning the action just a matter of giving it a light brush with the toothbrush looking thing in the kit and a wipe over with an oiled rag?

Any help would be great - again sorry for the dumb questions.

That's all I do for my 795. Then wipe down and shove back into the safe. Haven't ever run a patch or brush or bore cleaner thru it, and it's shooting well enough that I don't see the need for it.

Cleaning the chamber takes about 20", just don't over oil it. I use just general Remington gun oil I have laying around, nothing fancy.

If you wanted to shoot .2" groups at 200m then yes, more care would be required.

You don't need to clean the bore, it's a .22. Just squirt some oil in the action occasionally and when it gets real filthy and gummed up with carbon, spray it out with something like aerosol contact cleaner.

Yeah as long as it doesn't fuck your stock or any plastic parts... test it on a small area first.

    Yes.

I pull out the trigger group which is only 2 pins then slide the action out brake clean everything then go over it again with power lube and put it back together

Thanks for that. Mine is not a Marlin but a cheapo Magtech (mossberg ?) . I will have a look at it over the weekend to suss out how to at least partly dismantle it.
PS; Brake cleaner works well on stainless barrels

Brake cleaner worked a treat on the little Magtech. I also filled the nasty hollow stock with about half a tube of silicone sealant and the rifle balances nicely now.

Big thing is to not over lube it. Just a drop of oil or very light spray of silicon lube on top of the bolt. Too much just makes the action bind up with the blow back powder.

Wow. I take care of my 22 barrels just like I do with all of my other rifles.

Patch out till clean then ballistol, or your lube of choice.

Was seriously shocked by the comments on this thread!

As far as i am aware (from what small bore target shooters tell me) it doesn't pay to clean the bores of .22s as often they will lose their accuracy. These smallbore shooters are not touching their bores.

22lr projectiles don't have the copper like centrefire projectiles, and the type of powder used in rimfires i don't believe causes the same problems as centrefires.
