Make sure you have a hold/feel of the Howa in a shop before you buy, the regular hogue stock has a very wobbly flexy fore-end on it - the one I looked at I could push the stock against the barrel with one finger. I wouldn't be confident in it shooting consistently off a bipod, but see whether you like it or not.

Used an older Vanguard once and didn't get on with the action either - sloppy bolt with no half-cock meant having to rely on the safety, lost a deer because I couldn't reach the safety instinctively with my thumb as I brought the gun up for a quick shot. I do have fairly short fingers but haven't had that issue with other rifles.

Quite heavy rifles too but obviously you're aware of that and not worried by it. Good rep for accuracy and reliability though as others have said.

I have one in 243 and love it. it is heavier then the Tikka T3 but it has killed everything i aimed at and find it shoulders well, havnt had an issue with the houge stock interfering with barrel clearance at all. 2.5lbs trigger three position safety. great rifle that i would recommend.

Yep, was just going to say, my .223 has the Houge stock and it shoots F-Class off a harris bipod at the Deerstalkers shoots just fine, have racked up a few 100s with it.
When you load up the bipod forward you are actually pulling the stock away from the barrel, so as long as you aren't putting a lot of downward force on it its fine

Havn't got photos of it but its a standard houge black stock. comes with pillars etc. Just screw it on and sight it in. I have never been able to move my stocks to meet the barrel with the houges, Unlike the old A bolt stocks.
If you are in Wellys I can arrange a viewing.

I acquired a 223 heavy varmint with thumbhole laminate stock a while ago.

Bought the cheapest ammo the local shop had and zeroed at 200m then shot 3 half moa 3shot groups in a bit of a breeze.

Head shot a couple of goats a couple of weekends back at 180somthing y

    Seams to work.

Thanks for all the advice and opinions. I went and got one. Broke the barrel in and put a few more rounds through it to sight it in on Saturday. Very happy with it. Will be going out to a large forestry block this weekend to knock over a few goats and hopefully a pig or two.Name: 033.jpg

All to do now is upgrade the scope.

I've found when you've got an animal in your scope compared to paper, it doesn't matter how much recoil a rifle has, your so focused on the animal you don't even think about it

If you want something different if you do not like the green hogue stock you can always order a stock from Boyds in the USA failing that there is also bell and carson stocks
