Yes; I like the stock. Using a GRS bipod and a squeeze bean sock at the rear. Maybe if there's a next step I might look at their chassis type stock which allows the bipod to mount over rather than under on the spigot. Modified the hact trigger from 2 1/2 lbs down to 1-3/4 lbs too, since that group but have 'nt shot with the new trigger setting yet. Take away my elderly wobbles and I think the rifle would consistently shoot sub 1/2 moa at least out to 600 with 308 win; maybe further.
I have 2 Howa's;
Stainless 308 Varminter Supreme w Boyds Pepper Thumbhole stock - added Timney ( pre HACT trigger days) DPT Suppressed
Blued .223 Short action with standard rubber stock ( Boyds on order) - trigger springs exchanged for lighter units... DPT Suppressed
Photos to come of both
They group well finally after some investment in time, trial and error...

to be well-pleased with those groups
Good start with the 223 mini. With under 1/2moa
55gr winny box ammo to sight in and a group. Shot with 4x scope.
Look forward to doing some load development in the near future, but this is good enough to go hunting.
Stoked to see the stock perform.
Interesting comments about howa 1500 in this link but also some gold concerning rifle cleaning.

Dunno why pic didn’t attach.
Good start anyway.

Nice group for a 2.6kg package useing a 4x scope
I’ll put a photo of your rifle up since you forgot
Attachment 202789 @Freezer being the very Talented diy guy built himself this amazing fibreglass stock
The hole thing as shown is 2.6kg that’s just nuts
Go check out his thread in the home gunsmith and Projects Section
I’ve seen a lot of good reviews of Bell and Carlson stocks for howas , what the best source for a short action stock in NZ?
I got one through Shooter Ready in Cambridge about 3 weeks ago. Very very happy with it. Varmint model with the aluminium bedding block. They are imported and supplied to retail by Outdoor Sports NZ. However I think they only had a couple in stock then. Call Outdoor Sports and ask for Dion in sales, he’ll tell you what they’ve got in currently.
I had a B&C competition model on my .223
They are bloody heavy and for my application it just wasn’t the right Stock for the job so I sold it .
If you plan on getting out of the Ute and walking any distance then adding a heavy Stock to an already heavy rifle is something to consider.
The Stock was very good and well made , but just didn’t suit me .
I was thinking more of this one which the guy in the video says is heavier than the hogue https://youtu.be/M-sCci-l80o
This is what got:
https://www.bellandcarlson.com/index...tegory_ID=1074
Weighs 1300g. Irrelevant because it’s gone on a heavy barrelled varmint rifle for hill country prone shooting, accessed strictly by four wheeler!
Very happy with the finish and fit to the barrelled action. It replaced a KRG Bravo which I never really got on with.

I just haven’t been able to get mine to group at all. A couple of fluke 3/4” groups then repeat the load and get 2”.
Multiple groups keyholing then a flyer way way off. Scope and mount is well proven and it sounds like an obvious bedding problem.
Check bedding, reflect on my shooting, check mag box, reflect on my shooting, check barrel clearance, reflect on my shooting, re drill the action screws for more relief, confirm I can still shoot other rifles fine, swap bipods, troll the internet and start wandering if action screws are torquing the barrel (who knew this was a thing), clean barrel again..
Why oh why did I not inspect the crown earlier.
Attachment 203076
Running a paper clip over it clearly snags in several areas around the crown. It’s really difficult to photograph
Unfortunately I just modified the trigger and with 150 rounds down it I can’t see it getting replaced under warranty. Will be taking it to a gunsmith soon.
I really like this set up so hopefully I can get it to shoot.
Bugger
Bought a Mini action with a "heavy" barrel that shoot like a champ with Belmont 77gr SMKs.
These are all shot from bipod in mostly field conditions (back of the farm), utilizing a small rear bag.
Could not be happier with how she shoots... until I run out of this unicorn ammo. Might have to pull some rounds apart and try to replicate them with the once fired brass in future.Attachment 203713Attachment 203714Attachment 203716Attachment 203717Attachment 203718
Gunworks do a beautiful recessed target crown if you go that way but a quick tidy up of the crown hopefully will be cheaper than a rethread if that’s all that’s needed

Heres my vanguard.
Same same as a howa less the name.
Weatherby vanguard 308.
Stug stock
Vx5hd 2-10
20" suppressed.
Limbsaver to increase LOP for my gangly arms.
Trigger tuned to 2.5lb.
Running 168gr TMK at 2680fps.
This rifle just absolutely fucks.
Shoots almost any factory load within 1 inch and handloads it only gets better.Attachment 204679
looks like you are set for components for some time......and the sheet of plywood too!!!!!
so be looking for more next week you reckon????
That happened to be the best place for a photo coincidentally haha and to clarify I haven't Hoareded I just bought bits at a time over a few years with known load data which helps.
I like many others are eagerly awaiting some Sierra 7mm tmk but am set for the dirty 308
Out of view is my Dillon 550b and Redding big Boss so quality
20 round group, surplus ammo, not allowing the barrel to cool between reloads.
They shoot alright, Vortex NZ Mountian Challenge. Mod1500 6.5CM 26" heavy barrel
Attachment 205650
What model Delta scope is that?
Howa Mini .223 HB with dodgy 75gr HPBT reloads at 300 yards.
Attachment 205667
My brothers Howa .222 is the old Australia Mountaineer model. Late 80s. Still going strong. Re-barreled by a Gun Smith and it now shoots much better.
My wife Weatherby GH2 in .243 works well and my .223 sporter sits in a Boyd's thumbhole. All function perfectly and shoot well
I also have Tikkas but would take a Howa any day if the model and need suit my purpose.
Stryker
My mate wants a detachable magazine bottom metal for his Weatherby short action in 308.
Is a Howa interchangeable with the Weatherby ?
@dannyb
Any idea where he can get one from in NZ please?
Norsk, does he want to use AICS type magazines? Ive been using Lucky13 on some of my rifles and they are awesone.
@Stump is that the factory HOWA heavy barrel? I've got the carbon barrel and struggling to get the groups consistently under 1inch...
Yes factory barrel, My barrel didnt settle down till about 150-200 rounds.
My creedmoor now has arround 2000 rounds down it
So not as good as it used to be
But still dose the job arround 200-250 not ranged
Just last Tuesday
