    Hunting with a reflex/red dot

Does anyone here use a red dot / reflex sight for hunting deer sized game?
I'm looking at a Docter or vortex 3 moa sight (not the tube ones) instead of iron sights.
It's for a 308 where ranges would be well under 100m.

(Yes Jim I'm gonna get the gunsmith to drill and tap the poor Brno's recover, right through the stamped part :p )

Yep vortes sparc, old model not sparc 2. Good to 200 yds as is though I sometimes use the doubler at that range.

I used one for a coupla years, live capture from a heli, and they are excellent. Both eyes open, just keep looking at the animal and the dot hovers over where you want to put it. Very easy to become proficient, easy to use, and you are looking at the animal the whole time, not having to think about crosshairs etc. Tried one on a rifle right out to 200, dot got a bit big then, but hey the bullet went exactly where it was meant to. Just make sure you pick a good one, the cheap ones are just that - cheap!

Used one for ages on my blaser. Changed it for a 2-7 loopy because after a while using one, I found I needed to have some magnification to pick up obstructions in my line of sight that I would miss with my old eyes and a red dot

They are imo better than open sights, light on the rifle and allow quick target aquisition.
The type of bush I hunt regularly, needed just a bit more than I got out of the red dot.

I have done, and wouldn't hesitate to do so again but given the option a good 1-? Ilimanated scope is just more versatile so if space and weight allow I would rather have the scope.

Problem is a good red dot sight is much cheeper than a good scope.

I really like the aimpoint h2 and am slowly replacing cheeper rds with it as I find them second hand

Reason I'm looking at red dot is the Brno has a high bolt lift so means the scope is mounted sky high ruining the cheek weld where as a red dot can be slapped on the receiver plus it won't see action past 50m in reality.

At that range I can't see any issue with a rds at all. It's just the deer that on the other side of a clearing or down a riverbed that could cause frustration.
Another option to consider is a fwd mounted scout scope. I have a couple of Bushnell 2-7 pistol scopes mounted on rifles and it works well but you do lose a few min at each end of the day compared to a rds or std scope.

Thought about that but there isn't as much meat on it like a 527 plus you cant change it out for a new one if you fuck it up.

is the Trijicon 1-4x24 with a post / illuminated triangle reticle an option for you? had one on a 308 that works well and have just shifted it to another rifle. has a bit of magnification if required. the triangle sticks out like dogs balls in the bush and the post helps too (vs just a single red dot in the middle)

I love my 512 Eotech, no bunnies are safe within 150m on my 22. Verified 120y on hares.... That good enough? You can also get a Magnifier from various brands.

The accupoint 1-4 chevron reticle looks the business for a touch more versatility!

I have the 512 on my AR. I have shot ipsc targets with good results out to 300 without a magnifier.
Great for close work as well.

Mine has a really fine dot.

Was shooting with my 9mm dedicated carbine lastweek ,using a 512 Eotech .. shooting 147gr Subsonics home loads
We were shooting IPSC targets between 10 - 50mtr and also a 12×12 Gong @ 235mtr freehand ..I was pleasantly surprised

ps think the hostage/no shoot survived

Also gave the Gongs a nudge with the .223 & 300BLK(which has a Lucid7 fitted)
