(Forgive me 270 gods..) What sort of performance are people getting from short barrelled (16" ish) rifles? Ideally I would like to get out to 500 on deer size game without any worries if the opportunity presented itself? Will a short 308 get me the same results? Would be cheaper to build.

Thought you might be interested, not mine but probably the cheapest extreme weather I've seen.
