I've got the same rifle in 223. It shoots cheap Hornady Frontier SP in about 1 to 1.5 inch groups at 100m.
The stock sounds hollow and feels cheap, but is actually quite rigid when compared to other cheap rifles.

Now, what's this custom 6.5x55 that your friend is offering you? If you're not keen then I might be.
