    Leica Ultravid 8x20

Hey I'm thinking about getting a pair of the above as a light and fast option for getting around steep bushy North Island terrain like Rimutakas, Haurangis, etc. They don't take up much room and weigh almost half a kilo less than my 10x42s. Anyone have a pair? If so, how do you find them? Would you buy them again?

    cheers

I have a pair and rate them however their twilight performance is limited compared to a same brand pair of 8x32 or 10x40's. I purchased mine for trips where binoculars may only occasionally be required. If most of your glassing is for short periods during reasonable light levels I think you will be pleased with them. If however you tend to sit and glass for longer intervals, or first and last light is important, a pair of 8x30/32's may be a better option. The weight of the 8x20 means you are more likely to slip them in your pack, where a larger pair may get left at home. They are also ideal for other recreational activities such as tramping, MT biking, beach walking etc where its nice to have a nosey at that distant object. I use mine for varminting all the time. They are nice and clear, fit nicely into my top shirt pocket and for this purpose, are much safer than scanning with your rifle scope. In summary, yes I would purchase again! The Leica display may have a pair at the Sika show if you wanted to 'try before you buy' Good luck with your decision.

I had a pair of 8x42 Leupold and went lighter to 10x25 Leicas.
As you mention, 1/3 the size and weight and better adjustments to fit your face size, but you do notice the small objective light gathering ability at dusk and dawn.

My brother has a pair of Leica 10x25's and as dogmatix has suggested, these would be another very good option to consider.

I have the swaro el pockets 8x(25's I think) and swear by them. I use them over my big 10x42 leicas any day, even for the long range work

Been researching the Swaro CL Pocket today - they look like a good option. Seems like Leica is the true lightweight small form factor choice, but Swaro has the slightly bigger exit pupil, more eye relief and less finicky to use. But it weighs 100 gms more and is definitely bigger. Interesting choice. I'd imagine you can't go wrong it's just what you want to privilege - weight and size, or ease of use.
