Leupold HD v non HD is there much of a difference?

Title says it all - is there much of a noticeable difference between equivalent Leupold HD and non HD scopes?

I could be completely wrong but I thought the vx6 and vx6hd had the exact same glass, the upgrades were to differentiate it as the HD came standard with the alumina caps, the turret and the inbuilt level / illumination - that was for the vx6 3-18 HD anyway

There might be a difference in the way the glass is manufactured, but I suspect that because anything to do with optics these days is "High Definition", it will be just a marketing ploy.
In saying that, my VX6 HD is only acouple of months old and the glass is superb, including daylight and dusk. Certainly as good, if not better, as the european glass sitting next to it in the safe.

The vx5hd doesn't come with alumina caps or inbuilt level/illumination so I would doubt that is the difference between hd and non-hd

    Yes.

I have an older VX6 (non HD) and a VX5HD.

The VX5 is noticeably better in every aspect.

    I have a VX6 and VX6HD.
The HD seems to have slightly better glass, but the straight VX6 glass is still excellent and I wouldn’t hesitate to own another one instead of the HD model for the price difference.

Really good to hear, I just purchased a VX6 non HD, 1-6 It's going on a Marlin 30-30 so should be a nice little package.
