wd40 certainly no good near wood it will soak in and stain - does not last well as its a very light product - buts its the fact that it could get into places on a rifle that you dont want it - that and CRC have a capillary action they can get into minute places - maybe your scope - rumour it can get past rifle primers but dont quote me on that - thats my understanding of why many knowledgeable types say dont use it -one old gunsmith mate snarls if you say rifle and crc in same sentence - - my experience is it simply does not last as a protectant on metal like rem oil does - I do take a very small bottle of breakfree with me on back country trips pull a little thru at night on a rag and remove in morning - just in case damp night in camp - no WD 40 CRC loosen nuts bolts for me thats it but at work we have a better product than that for nuts called nut cracker commercial mechanics product ( no not the wifey pissed of at your boozy night out )

When I use blued rifles (and shotguns) I put a smear of lanicote https://www.crc.co.nz/crc-lanocote-natural-spray-500ml/ on all of the non exposed surfaces. It sets into a non-slippery coating, so ok for rifle bedding surfaces. No rust even after swimming in the salt end of the Hoteo drift shooting.

All exposed bits get Balistol. It's great stuff.

I have always used hoppes oil or 3in1, but I tried Birchwood casey barricade recently and I'm definitely a fan of it.

Wife got sewing machine serviced. Talking to the guy about oil. Said 3in1 bad for sewing machines as it plugs them up (no worries for rifle of course) so sold me a litre of his light oil for $10 from a 20 litre drum he had had for years. Had to take my own container.
I know a lot but it seems less every day...

Plain old mineral oil for my blued rifle. I've never used Ballistol, but that stuff sounds interesting (fancy mineral oil).

I love the smell of Hoppes #9 but understand it's not too good for a wooden stock, so I'm careful with it.

which Hoppes some is a barrel solvent not for long term protection of external metal- solely for removing internal fouling -- there maybe a hoppes product for external use as a protection dont know

Yes there is, but I can't tell any difference between hoppes lubricant oil and standard machine oils. Save some $$$ and use 3in1.

No, ignore that. I checked in the garage and I was right - I have both Hoppe's #9 oil and #9 cleaner. Geez, you had me doubting myself for a minute...
