Need some suggestions fella on a special gift/family heirloom firearm...what would yo

So I have been asked to find a nice firearm for a mate for a special gift. Something he can have forever, obviously use, and pass down to kids.

Could be a shotgun or rifle. Has to be new, and easily obtainable here in NZ, at short notice. Budget is up to $7k.

I was thinking maybe a Sako Bavarian in .222 or 6.5x55 topped with a Swarovski scope. Something he can take on afternoon hunts. Soft shooting for kids ... when he finally has some

I did think Blaser, but then he’d have to buy optics to match - the rifle would soak up most of that budget.

The other thought was a nice under and over, he does like bird shooting , doesn’t do a hell of a lot of it, but has mentioned in occasion he’d like an under and over.

    Thoughts and suggestions guys??

Can’t go wrong with the Sako, maybe 223 with a can on it for the kids to use?

Yeah I was thinking .223 as well. Really only thought the .222 for a bit of history’s sake, deer culling days and what not.

6.5x55 would be pretty sweet though?

    Swaro? Zeiss? Other??

6.5 Swede would be better all round calibre and fits nicely with Euro heritage of Sako, or may be a Sauer as another option.

    A timber stocked Sauer 404 in 6.5x55. They're a beautifully made rifle.

Why not a custom rifle. I'm sure Greg could rustle up a nice walnut stock and a good barrel and action.

I have a Sako Deluxe in 6.5x55 it is a beautiful rifle, stock is amazing, they run about 4.5K.
something like that [Bavarian if that takes your fancy more] topped with a Euro scope would be the ticket alright

Or this if you wanted to go the field gun way with whatever extras you chose to go with it. Leather case etc

There was a guy advertising on Trademe a couple of weeks back that did firearm engraving. Something engraved on the floorplate would be pretty cool.
I can't see his ad anymore, but you might find someone else to do it.

This guy here might be worth getting in touch with
