    new barrel

well several years ago I bought back my old 788 Remington - had been my go to rifle in seventies and damn accurate - but like an idiot bought a Weatherby 270 and sold 788 to farming friend up north - was offered it back cheap 2 years ago - grabbed it - got it home to find that in the 25 years he had it not cleaned and worse pitted - not just pitted one about an inch inside barrel is a bloody crater - so new barrel- its a 788 Remington 18 1/2 in factory barrel in 308 threaded - I will stick with length and profile - whats out there you gunsmithy types - the only one I have heard bad things about is Hardy so no - not keen on second hand - why was it removed - what else fits ?? new what does it ?? - will be keeping it as my main rifle now - price ??
the Weatherby was accurate but that stock just got sick of the noise bush hunting - scratchy noisy - traded it on a Tikka 690 and again should not have sold that lol we are gluttons for punishment

Have a target barrel. Mike Collings can rethread, rechamber and turn it down at a very reasonable price.

yes it still shoots but I know that bloody great pit is there and more and that pisses me off no end - plus no resale in a few years time with it like that- doing okay on tractors so rebarrel - with my eyesight going west I reckon on 4-5 years more hunting its worth it -

Your $$$ bud. I'm just thinking that in current market with rooted looking barrel it's on par with that model 70 sitting at $400 that will sell if gets to $300..... If you rebarrel,it's still competing with lowest price brand new rifle so...maybe fetch you $700???? Entirely up to you bud.

You're right about Hugh keeping it original.
I made enquiries with him about eighteen months ago about a barrel.
    And guess what?
If everything was left up to him, everything would still be original. Hasn't replied to any of my emails.

    I wondered that.
But when his site appears to be functioning like he's still going I would expect a notice stating his status.

Did your mother warn you that you could go blind by playing with toy too much.

Is it a normal Remington barrel thread like the 700?
It's not all of them, but it's always them.
