Not getting mixed up with Laurie Bradley are you? He's more the wood man than Hugh.

    new barrel

I had an 18” .308 barrel contoured and fitted at truflite early 2024. Top notch job, nicely engraved, threaded muzzle with matched thread cap. $1400.

Rifle club guys have probably got old 308 barrels tucked away that would have enough tenon left to rethread, rechamber. They often have plenty of life left in them for a hunting rifle, just lost top match accuracy. They can often be picked up for next to nothing or free. Only have to pay machining costs then. Worth thinking about.

New barrels fitted by an NZ gunsmith are sooo expensive they are just not worht it. 788s come up on TM ocasionaly so you might find one with a good barel. I was lucky that Tikka barrels fitt Ruger M77s if you make a washer to headspace the barrel (tennon is longer on the Tikka). That was a cheap barrel swap.

It sounds like Savage barrels have the same thread but they don't come up too often (as cast offs).

You could also ask someone like Pac-Nor if you can export a pre-fit from the US. https://pac-nor.com/ Their plant burnt down in 2020 but seems their back.

I have played with getting a 788 a couple of times, nice rifles and left handed versions pop up but yes barrels and also trigers aren't as easy to get as 700 parts.

But....but ....but..... Just like granddad's axe that's had three new heads and four new handles,it's still the same axe..IF you picked up another rifle of same type, you could swap barrels over, sell off the donor action with the now dodgy barrel...put good barrel on "your rifle" and be no worse off than putting on new barrel.....in that it's just as much your original rifle as it would be if you had put on a new barrel.
