No they aren't. I'll dig up some screenshot of barrel threads I have. Threads are close but not quite.
I will say that I believe a model 7 barrel might clean up just enough as the 788 tenon is pretty long and you would get heaps of virgin metal to start. I'll see if I can find the dimensions for them

From memory the Remington 788 barrel tenon is a 20 tpi thread , closer to 1” while the remington 7/700 is 1 1/16 th and 16 tpi. The thread length on the 788 is fairly longer than the 700. So I am not sure that a rem 7 barrel would work. A savage barrel would be a better candidate in a way except that the entrance chamber end might need to be reworked ( à la 3 rings of steel of the 700 ) and there might not quite be enough thread length to accomodate the ugly nut. Again , you are best to be starting from scratch with a new barrel.
Ok I just had a Remington 308 barrel luying around in Upper Hutt
It's not all of them, but it's always them.
Nah mate, its distinctly different from the Rem 700 the 788 uses a 20tpi and the thread is longer, and interupted from memory(action screw goes into the thread, so that part gets removed.) Ive done some 788s. Great rifles.
Hugh is getting long in the tooth now, still does some beautiful stocks,I've had him thread rifles for me but pretty sure he is only doing a day or two a week these days....I guess like many of the gunsmiths winding down,it's hard to find apprentice to pick up the slack,or just too hard to deal with the Hassel involved...
75/15/10 black powder matters
Not that I've any knowledge or experience of them BUT what about true flite? From memory their sporting barrels start around $660 but I think thats for the blank, will then require machining by your chosen gun wizard
expect nothing, appreciate everything - and there's ALWAYS something to appreciate
You can almost add a 1 in front your figure to see what the total price will be at the end.
Yes, if you say "new barrel" you are also saying "price of new gun". So the original gun needs to be worthy of it. Sentimental, one off or suchlike.
Restraint is the better part of dignity. Don't justify getting even. Do not do unto others as they do unto you if it will cause harm.
Tahr it sure is - when new and I originally had it as my main rifle back in seventies I would have put it up against a Tikka or Sako for accuracy and it handles - natural pointability as did many Remingtons of the era - my old 742 handled like a good shot gun - so yes its worth it -
thanks all for replys to me its worth it steel wood and yes sentimental value - I would sooner have that 788 with a new barrel than a new TIKKA -just not me - mind you a Sako Forester or Shultz and Larsen would sway me but bank says no --True Flight may be the go always good reports
Oh yes I know one or two places in nz where the figure starts with a 2 in front
