Thread: Old rusty shotgun ammo

Hi all. After some ideas on how to dispose of some rusty old shotgun ammo found during an deceased estate clean up. Thinking give it to the coppers?

if its beyond useage......and thats pretty far gone yes...if you not a shotgun man yourself,give to mate who is and they can make call on it.Ive fired some pretty old n dodgy looking shotgun rounds over the years without issue.

The problem with old rust ammo is that every time you fire one, some of the rust sticks to the chamber. This can lead to extraction problems or the need to polish the chamber in very short order. In my view it is better to repurpose the components.

I have just cut the the case and the wad, pulled out the bottom of the wad to get the powder out and then bin it

All depends on how rusty. If you can give the heads a bit of a scuff up with a polly pad and the chamber and extract out of the shotgun, this is the main thing.
Next I would place them for a few days in a warm environment say an airing cupboard to take any of the moisture out of them. Obviously with the crimp facing up.
Then have a go.
I shot some 32 year old stuff at magpies when home just now. Went off fine had tarnish marks on the brass. No rust on the primers. Went with a hiss and a roar…..think that magpie fair poooed himself into the next life

Got some picks of the cases in question. If there plastic your ok. Old paper ones on the other hand can be harder to judge.
