Options for installing "iron" sights on a modern rifle

Long story short - using a Savage 223 with AI DBM for service rifle comps after the fun police stepped in...

I've currently got a Vortex 1-8 on it for Open/Optics class, but would like to see what options are out there for irons class.

One option would be to take an A2 front sight post and machine the front of the barrel to .750 and then pin it. I have a cut-down version of a carry handle sight that would fit on a short section of pic rail.

This way I would have elevation and windage adjustment, and a reasonable peep sight. There might be some height/alignment issues between the rear and front sight, but nothing major.

I would prefer to have the following:

    peep
    windage adjustment
    elevation adjustment

    Any other clever ideas ?

Cut-down rear A1, traditional front ramp and file-able blade.

Elevation adjustment is hard to do.

@gimp, this is what I have for the rear - windage and elevation included

only hassle I can see is that it is 1.4 inches from base to the peep, so that would mean a TALL ramp up front...

Yes it's simply too high to be nicely usable on a bolt action - the height of receiver over bore is already significantly greater than an AR so you'd need a 3 inch FSB

I'm sure you've looked into this but could a sight from a fulllbore target rifle (PH 5A or 5C or a central) be fitted to your new gun ? A matching foresight might come with it. You know you dont want to turn down the barrel specially that last inch ...

For this application it would need to be a post up front, a tunnel/ring would not be practical.

Interesting comment about not turning down the last inch of a barrel. I have not found it to be an issue at all. All TR rifles have this, and one of my most accurate FTR barrels had been turned down for a front sight. Does not seem to make any difference at all, as long as the crown is kept in good order.

There's actually heaps of custom options once you get on board with the idea of cutting stuff up

get a set of steel 2-piece bases, throw the front one in the bin, mill the rear one flat on top and bolt this to it, get a winged front sight ramp from one of a million suppliers and file down the front sight til it fits. Gives you some elevation adjustment at least without being stupidly high.

I think that unless they start to tweak SMC 4, anything you do other than use an as-issued bolt action will put you in Open Class. I’m sure there’s increased interest in SMLE’s, Mosins etc because those of the 300 odd NZSRA members who don’t already have a service issue bolt action are now looking for them.
    dogmatix and Tommy like this.
10MRT shooters do it 60 times, in two directions and at two speeds.
