The barrels been in there for a century! You need to relieve the barrel off the action face usually in a lathe but careful use of a grinder and cut off wheel will do it. It relieves the stress off the threads which are square thread and possibley rusty. Plug the chamber and soak action barrel area with crc, gently heat action to assist penetration.

I made some wood blocks today and roughly inletted them to put the action in a vice and try screw the barrel off.... used the biggest pipe wrench I could find (not worried about marking the barrel cos its toast anyhow.. ) and swung all my weight on it and it wasnt coming off, tried putting about 1 meter pipe extension on the handle for more leverage, still no go , I did consider pushing down on the wrench with the front end loader on the tractor but called it a day at that stage

The hardening of the 14/17's could be abit suspect during wartime manufacture with some being soft and some to hard(prone to facturing) examine the locking lugs and recesses for any signs of cracks.
