Its got the alloy trigger housing theres no numbers on the bolt and no model number on it theres bnp stamps on everything. On the underneath of the barrel its got .243w, 2.045" and what looks like tongber or something. I also noticed it had a fiber washer sitting on top of the rear pillar in the stock.

So what ive done to see what happens if you float it is replace the fiber washer with a steel one as that will just be crushing and I remember I had an omark a while back and it had been bedded with shim steel. So thats what ive done with this. I put shims for the action to sit on just behind the recoil lug just enough to float the barrel, if its worse or something I can just take them back out..maybe Im flogging a dead horse but what does one do when your not a tv watcher

The bolt will be numbered, it's a 1200TX action same as the target rifle - I think these were the PH1200 some such letter as the TX was the target rifle designation.

Bedding these isn't technically difficult but it requires specific attention to certain bits. Almost need to think of it as pivoting around the front action screw with a tail screw resisting the lifting forces at the back. The factory skinny barrel doesn't help with this, but bedding the first 4 or 5 inches of barrel around the chamber is a good start. The bolt will be marked somewhere, can be hard to find...

    Greetings,
What looks like a pillar is likely just a spacer between the tang and the bottom metal. If the two guard screws are overtightened then this can compress the stock so that the receiver is under tension. A washer under the tang attempts to fix this. It should be easy to tell if your receiver is from a target rifle, the two screw holes in the bridge will be much larger than the usual 6-48.
    Regards Grandpamac.

The 1200 actions were made in Spain. The bedding issue is around the rear tang. Despite their use as sniper rifles in various countries they were never real popular as a fullbore target rifle here in NZ. Several vastly stiffer actions were available.

    Mmm. Interesting.
I bedded the 270 parker hale project and wasn't impressed with it initially but haven't got back to it.
Maybe the bedding in the rear not so good?'

I make a pillar for the rear screw and epoxy that in before bedding the front of the action.
You need a clearance on the rear of the tang too.

Thanks for the info everyone, some of you guys must be having a chuckle at this guy trying to make his ancient parker hale more accurate. But for me that's half the fun of it. Better to try something and fail than to try nothing and succeed.

I would second this, I did rear pillar at the same time as the front and it was a real pita as everything is then floating until the bedding job is complete

Took it out again today. I floated the barrel temporarily using shim steel like someone had done on an omark I used to have. This time I could shoot it at 100m. First up I used some 85gn loads the same as I used last time and it shot just over 2.5" . then I tried some 80gn loads I made up to try. The first group went 3/4" and the next one went 1" cracked it I thought. these were all from a cold barrel. After the walk to and back from the target feeling quite good about it I thought Id shoot a few more nice groups, for the rest of the shots it went to shit shooting all over the place. Did the usual check of all the scope mounts action screws and barrel clearance in the stock. Might be time to try a bedding job...

Are you asking this to find screws for bedding - if so dont stress, any screw that is a loose near enough fit will do as the screws are only locater's
