Having disposed of some guns and with an indefinite build time I am looking at a standard barrel for my R93. Fluting is an $888 gst inc option. I love fluting, but even my love has limits.
So where have others landed on this and why?

JAYEEAUSUS!!!!!
I'd be thinking fuck that.
I may have whispered something similar. Needs to be factory fluted too...phosphate finish I think.
Gunworks: PLEASE NOTE WE CANNOT FLUTE BLASER BARRELS DUE TO THE TRINITE COATING (WHICH IS AN EXTREMELY HARD COATING)... so $588 more than getting done locally.
I think the threading can be done but fluting no.
@veitnamcam is handy with I big angle grinder I believe.
I reckon he'd have a crack for half that price[emoji6]
....how hard can it be (pun intended).
Not much cant be done with a 9"bosch
I'm with Brads, fuck that.
I don't remember it being that much when the option was suggested. Was told it wasn't worth it cos it saved fuck all weight. A machinist can do it but will chew a few tooling heads and make the coating useless which is why they say do factory option.
Price accurate as of today. I think it is pretty clear cut (pun intended).
get done locally and ceracoated?
Possibly if someone was prepared to do it and it didn't end up costing a lot.
They are harder can't do it the way most do with horizontal gear cutters, carbide ball nose will do it.
But wouldn't bother, factory ones are done before hardening, doing a standard one your asking for a lemon accuracy wise.
Threading them is easy with modern carbide tooling, hss is thing of the past almost

and along with the artistic (one off) fluting pattern it could come in a multitude of barrel lengths if you thought it was too heavy, which of course it will be :) cause that's why you wanted it fluted.
In fairness and to be truthfull for that price you would still be better off having the factory do it as its one less excuse for them to trott out if its not 100% for some reason.
Be interesting to know what the weight saving would be.
Regardless, I dont think it's worth it. None of my blaser barrels are fluted and all are accurate :)
Fluting will save hardly any weight. How much does a new fluted barrel cost? ie buy a new fluted barrel and sell your unfluted barrel. Might work out cheaper.
No Stug I don't have a barrel...wondered if worth getting fluted over non-fluted.
A Blaser R93 *standard calibre barrel *is $1318-00.
Plus the extra charge for magnum calibre of $406-00.
Plus extra charge for Fluting of $888-00.
A Magnum Calibre bolt head in right hand is $343-00.
that makes me sort of sick... you can nearly buy a brand new sako finnlight for that money!
I still kinda want a blaser tho
I had to sit down.
Fluting is a waste of time for noticable weight saving on a standard profile barrel imo.
Carbon wrapping saves notable weight and has way better cooling and adds rigidity to a barrel. Much longer shot strings before heat effects accuracy etc.
Would not bother for the simple reason you will not carry it around thinking how much lighter it is with just fluting.
You could buy a standard barrel, cut it off at the receiver and have a stainless barrel fitted at that price. A couple hundy extra and you could get it wrapped.
mine handles like a dream and doesn't look to bad either.

So to clarify for a carbon wrapped barrel you buy a normal barrel, chop it, mount a new barrel and have it wrapped?
....I could have a stainless fluted barrel!
Better cooling?
Who does the wrapping?
i have one on my poo poo free, sheds head like a bar@tard. Seems technique for the wrapping is somewhat controversial.
Mine came from Advanced Barrel Solutions in the US which was sold to Proof Research. Google is your friend
Would I have another, yes if it was cost effective and proven accurate
My new build is a with a Proof Research barrel...great youtube vid of how tough their CF barrels are.
+1

Interesting article here about carbon-fibre wrapped barrels and cooling. Carbon's Next Step Looks like you have to use the right sort of carbon fibre.
Yes as I thought. .. I asked the question because I can hold a white hot 8mm carbon rod about a inch from the hot bit and its cold.
Rebranded to Bla$er....fixed it....:ORLY:
All I know is that with a laser thermometer my current barrel cools shitloads faster than it did in the same profile barrel unwrapped.
Shoots my zero, hot or cold and I have shot 2 10 round strings with projectiles I wanted rid of, and both strings with a slight vertical component, went under 1.2" @ 100 yrds.
Try that with a standard hunting contour barrel.
My original point being, not only are they lighter, they maintain accuracy and cool way faster. More than you need for a hunting rifle..
Fluting is old school.
