Hey All,
I've just bought a new rifle today and when I got it home to "ahhhh" over it, I took a light to the muzzle and saw chatter marks from the tooling. I'm planning on taking it back to the shop tomorrow and asking them to order another one in. Surely this is a reasonable request that they should follow or not?

Just speed bumps? I'd take it back and ask the question
A lot of hamer forged barrels have these marks, but they still seam to shoot okay.

winchester m70 extreme weather. Bar the chatter marks she's a pretty sweet rifle but from past experiences - chatter marks are not good! There was also copper fouling which made me :wtfsmilie: I would have thought even if they had fired a test round or two at the factory they would clean it? Not sure winchester does a test fire or not?

Kj - are they normally quite noticeable? I'm sure it will shoot fine, it's just the copper fouling that will annoy me

Yeah I saw that. Not quite as bad as that, but still noticable to the naked eye easy enough. I just hope I don't have a battle like he did. I'll find out tomorrow though when I take it back in. First time I've ever seen a brand new rifle with copper fouling evident though
Well you did buy American Made I gave up on buying U.S. made rifles years ago due to this kind of thing
My ultimate shadow was the same re copper fouling.but didnt really think much of it.and at the end of the day didnt effect my barrel.I might pull the other three of the wall and have a closer look at them on saturday.Quote:

Will do Josh. I've just finally finished getting the copper out of the barrel :( Had to leave boretech in it overnight and today. It looks like the copper has "burnt" taking of a layer of stainless as there is now white "patches" where the copper was. I'll let the the store I bought it from know, and then go out and put a few rounds through her :)
Those are probably just clean bits of s/s protected from carbon by the first bullet laying copper on its way down the tube.
Do you reload? I have found firing a few blanks down a clean barrel to lay down some carbon virtually iliminates copper in a barrel that only "streaks" a bit.
Could you get some carbon and brush it down your barrel?

yeah time will tell. I'll putting 100 rounds through her in the next month to break her in and abit of load testing so if she doesn't shoot well at that stage I'll....ummmmm....wellllllll......cut her up and dig a hole and buy a tikka :x_x:!!.
But in all seriousness - I've got one mate with 3 tikkas, and another mate with 2 sako a7's (fuck I'm lucky to have 2 mates :thumbsup:) and the bloody things have never given them any trouble and they shoot fuckin mint. I've had to fark around with my rifles to get them to shoot well and it's got me fucked. I know it's not me, as i've shot all those rifles over the last couple of years and had great success with animals and on paper.

With the barrel that came with it it shot well mate, i went through the rebuilding process as i wanted a different call how ever i was adamant that i wanted the action to saty and im happy i did mate i beleive the action on the winchesters to be of a high quality. ask the gunsmiths what they thinkQuote:

Thats good news yours shot well with the factory barrel. Out of interest - did the right hand side bolt lug gouge a mark down the right hand side of the action? This one has and at first I though it was the extractor claw, then the "fin" below it, but have now come to the conclusion it's the bottom of the bolt lug. The smoothness seems lacking a wee bit - could be because it's new, but it feels "off" Maybe I'm just use to brownings. The rifle itself including the action seems well made and solid - there's no plastic on it at all which is great and the factory bedding is one of the better I've seen. Fark, maybe I'm just a fussy prick?....:P
The problem with the action smoothness is it is made in America:D

You have every right to be you have invested good money for a good rifle and you should be getting good quality. I was shocked to see the pic of the barrel at the start of this thread and thought shit even the budget rifles had a better finish.Quote:

You may be talking about my other thread re the bedding job - and by christ that was shocking. I ended up getting Abe (Tuiman) to sort it out and he did mint - cheers Abe!! Shouldn't of sold the friggin thing but I was going to be buying my mates 7mm rem mag but just couldn't do it, an then I couldn't re-neg on salling the a-bolt either so I was stuck between a rock and a hard place - re-neg (not an option) or buy the 7mm (love my .270's)
Too me it's a lot of money, and the money I've invested in my hobby (as we all have) is quite large and it's the justifying to the wife part thats the most difficult - shit, half my gear is my "mates"....hahaha. Well I went out and today after getting some bases sorted out and put 15 shots through it. Used 3 winchester 130gr soft points to get it on paper and the scope roughly where I wanted it. Cleaned the powder out but not the copper otherwise I'd be there all bloody day. Then put 3 x factory hornady 130gr SP which grouped .836" which friggin surprised me abit. Then put 3 x handloaded 140gr Sierra HPBT. Grouped terrible at 2". Then put another 3 x 140gr Sierra HPBT with a slightly hotter load by .5gr and they grouped at .878" which I was more than happy with. Then went out to 300yds and put 3 x factory hornady SP into a target I could barely see and that group measured just under 4 inches. Whilst not great I was more than happy with that considering the conditions. I'll load some more sierras up and do some more testing, but overall I'm fairly impressed with the rifle so far.
