Thread: Recommendations on scope flip covers...

Got caught in rain last hunt, struggled to see through water and exterior fog on lens.

I'm aware of Butler Creek. Any other recommendations e.g. the plethora of ex-China options?

I'm using Vortex Crossfire II 3-9×40 and Nikko Stirling 3-9x40 mainly. However also have some Scout Scopes that would potentially benefit from flipups.

What do you use/like?

All i use is a neoprene scope cover, have for years and it works, takes seconds to flick it off.
Every now and again if i am waterproofing a jacket i will use the same spray and give it a coat

I have a neoprene cover on a scout scope. Its ok but I really want flip caps that give me some look-thru ability. And if I'm still hunting in bush, I don't want to have to take off, and retain, or lose, a neoprene cover.

Just spotted Bronco has the Vortex caps in stock but bloody hell, $110 for a pair. Anyone tried them? Are they worth that money? They certainly claim they are.

I hate flip caps and neoprene covers.
Moisture turns to condensation and you don't notice until you need to see through it.
I use extensions both ends made of rubber tube for the rear and pvc for the front.
Similar to a sunshade.

Rubber bikini caps good low cost option

I have used a Butler Creek Blizzard cover on the objective lens only for many years. These ones are see through so you don't actually have to flip them up if it isn't necessary. Bicycle tube on the ocular end.

Vortex covers are useless, as soon as it gets cold they just slide off the scope. I got some tenebraex covers for a leica scope (had to ship from Canada but arrived within a week) which have great build quality but are on the pricey side. They make scope model specific caps which thread onto the objective side, very secure

If it's pissing with rain don't you just get a tube full of water at one end or the other?

Best thing I've found that actually helps is when the scope has a hydrophobic coating, lens still gets wet but you can still see well enough to shoot.

Not if you put some thought in to it.

Rubber car tube. Stretched tight over length of scope. Can be flicked off with one hand. Doubles up as a fire lighter if needed. Go to a tyre repair shop. They'll give you an old tube.

Cheap chinese (aliexpress) ones.

flip open, and are transparent. i.e. perfect for fast close range.shots where clarity is not a concern.

Rainx water repellent glass spray works well. Only thing is if the lens has an external coating you'll be rubbing it, and some coatings aren't super strong... but if you've ever cleaned your lenses you have nothing to lose, and it works great for water repellency.
