Thread: Replacing Tikka stock

Something I have wondered about...lots of guys seem to upgrade the Tikka plastic stocks to CF.
Do people see any improvement in performance. My Tikka Rem Mag shoots crazy good groups...but at times I feel like the groups move up and down the paper a bit at longer distances (600 yards).
I guess the same question applies to barrels.

I figure it's all about weight and looks.... Have changed mine to a boyds, and the 308 is currently ia dpt chassis (saves any issues with bedding and looks bloody good). He factory plastic I don't like the feel of and are bloody noisy if you knock then on something

Groups moving up and down a bit at 600 yds are probably more an ammunition velocity consitency issue rather than bedding or stock issues

depends who you buy them off,for me, i have 2 stug stocks, they are not the prettiest cf stocks to look at (sorry stug) but they are light and they
come bedded. also cheaper than other cf stocks that may look better but they aren't bedded. weight and accuracy delt to in one, that's why i have
mine, the weight difference is heaps.

Its a problem I haven't had time to understand. The groups generally have tiny vertical spread (wind is unreadable where I shoot...along a stop bank with wind coming unevenly thru shelter belts)...I then walk the combined 1200 yards and shoot another tiny group maybe 4 inches lower. It could be updraft that the stop bank creates as well.

I just haven't had time or the conditions to get my head around it.
It could so easily be my setup and possibly one way to lessen the effect of setup is a CF stock.
It could be changing temperature as I am always shooting late evening...again stock rigidity might have an impact.

All good fun but more than good enough to shoot deer.

So accuracy improved measurably?

+1 for what @stug said. Are u hand loading or factory Ammo ? Are u shooting off bipod or bags? Is the vertical drift within a group ? Or between groups ? What’s the main use of rifle - hunting or gongs ? If it’s hunting and your first 2 shots are consistent & accurate then that’s all I’d be worried about. Should only need 1 shot & occasionally a back up, aye! Tikka sporter barrels are not designed to shoot long strings��

Reloading...bipod with rear bag...no vertical drift in a group...groups are effectively fired 1/2hr apart and cooling between shots within the group (and mostly two shot groups to keep things cool).

This is not a major problem...but annoying when the groups are so good.
And just wondering if this kind of issue is the reason so many plastic stocks are sold on here and trademe.

Hate to say but a two shot group isnt a group. its just two shots, fired a couple of minutes apart from what you are saying, nothing wrong with that for consistency. But if you include the other previous two shot group, from 1/2 an hr previous then its a big group.
What about trying one 5 shot group shot over the same period of time ?

What you say is valid...I cringed mentioning the group size...but its a pattern that has repeated enough times (on different nights) to be valid (in my mind). But you are right...I need to shoot the big group over time (its very much a barrel cooing thing I do)

This rifle is potentially a laser...had a first time shooter put 3 rounds into 12mm vertical and 24mm horizontal at 400 yards in a messy wind recently.
It was extraordinary shooting and I would have had him carry on for a bigger group but cooling the can and people waiting for the range in miserable conditions meant we cut it short. The guy is a High Performance physio who spends a lot of time with Olympic level athletes in the gym. A life focussed on perfect technique and extreme concentration...very impressive.
