Curiosity got the better of me and I grabbed a gen 2 Ruger ranch in .22arc.
Chucked an arken epl4 4-16x44 on it in vortex rings and an old dpt up front.
Took two boxes of Hornady, 62gr eld-vt and 88gr eld-m.
I’ve had gen 1 rugers in the past and aside from having a higher cheek piece and a bit of a textured feel they’re very similar between 1 and 2.
Trigger is terrible, meant to be adjustable from 3-5lb, with a fair amount of tinkering I managed to get it down its lightest setting.. a modest 4.2lb. I have a timney on order which will tidy that up.
Anyway I put 40 rounds through it today and I’m confident she’s going to be a goody. Shooting in 24 degree weather with wind gusting between 22-28km/h i put a few groups on paper.
This particular rifle didn’t seem to be a huge fan of the eld-vt load with 3x 5 shot groups all sitting around that 1-1.5”ish mark at 100m. Not bad, but not great. Av 3048 fps
I shot a 10x group with the 88s next after a 15 min rest and was fairly happy until shot number 10.. between groups I was whipping my suppressor off to help cool things down quicker and after this string of 10 when I went to unscrew my suppressor I found it to be about a 1/4 turn loose, whether that’s to account for the 10th yucky shot I couldn’t tell you. But it is what it is. Av 2560fps
Fairly happy with this set up for a goat getter, shows some real promise. I think the to do list consists of chucking in new trigger, copper/carbon descunge and maybe a bit of a dremel job on the barrel channel to give it a bit more breathing room.
Velocities were respectable considering it has a 16” barrel and Hornady factory offerings are all loaded to gas gun pressures (mild). I have dies on order which are due early December so until then I’ll co tinie gathering brass but I’m confident I’ll be able to squeeze those 88s out around 2750-2800fps.
Just thought I’d share my experience and will add more to this thread as the show goes on. Probably missed a few details so flick any questions you have through. Ta
