    Rust

Had a balls up, haven’t had my rifle out in quite a while. Some how some water has made its way into my gun safe and the foam padding at the bottom had absorbed ,potentially came through the block wall behind it . Any way the bore looks fine I always push an oily patch through when I know I’m not using it for a while but I store it barrel down and the outside of the barrel has coped a hiding. My surpessor will hide it but any tips to tidy it up ? Was thinking some fine steel wool ? Name: C08EA061-5D35-40FA-9E59-1F244F7D3E15.jpeg

Brass wool (goldilocks) as steel on steel is not good with some balistol should remove it…..
    Pays to always oil “stainless”.

Soak fine steel wool with oil and rub gently works well

Get some quadruple zero steel wool and use it with Balistol as suggested by garyp. You can purchase the steel wool at the likes of Bunnings but make sure you ask for quadruple zero as anything more coarse than that will scratch. A small pinch of the steel wool is all you will need to use so you will have shitlaods left over for the next time.

A lot on the forum like 4 0000 steel wool I use it but I like to start with a very coarse piece of old towel and do it over 3-4 days spray on WD 40 OR BALLISTOL or nut cracker - leave for a night more spray- gentle pat with towel and just keep going until gone - real bad ones I have cleaned up for mates yup 4OOO steel wool

Never use steel on steel. Always use a softer metal to clean a harder metals rust - with oil as a lubricant while doing so. I prefer soft stainless wool to clean with, one mate swears by a fine brass brush. However a trick we both agree on is use an edge of the neck of a fired case to dig into bubbled rust to pull the hard bits off when the soft wool won't quite cut it.

Good luck, cleaning the rust off guns while doing no damage to existing finish is an art. Boiling and carding is the pinnacle but is a bit of a faff for a small piece of rust.

If it has a satin finish, then find a company that can give it a light bead blast, it will be good as new. I have done it a few times on marked stainless

As a completely different option, considering the end of the barrel is clearly pitted, mask off all but the last 2-3" of the barrel where the rust is with some waterproof tape, and then treat it with a rust neutralization product like Quik Rust Remover https://www.bunnings.co.nz/quik-1l-r...mover_p0270367
This will kill the rust at source, then treat with eezox before any flash rust starts.

Flake away the heavier rust first while it is dry, with a softer metal such as brass. Avoid turning it into a grinding paste with steel wool and oil mixed in with rusty stainless flakes initially.

I seriously dislike steel wool as tiny bits embed into the surface and then rust progressively
I second Frontier Big 45. I’ve tried everything and it beats all hands down. Worth the wait to get it.
