    Rusted bolt carrier group

I'm bringing my shooting gear out of storage and found a wet box. Nothing much of value in it except a small cardboard box in which I had hidden the bolt carrier group for my AR15. It is all rusted up. Do I hit it with the break free and try salvage it, or just get a new one? If I do get a new one will it shoot? It used to

It's rooted, send it to me and I'll dispose of it safely.

A lot of the bcg will be fine with some rust, the bolt head will be the most finnickety, but things like the gas rings and extractor ejector springs and stuff would surely have some oil on them? As Beavis says, pics pics pics

drop it in a bottle of kero or diesel and forget about it for a few weeks

wiggle it and drop it back in

scrub it with a tooth brush then drop it back in

    wash rinse repeat

No luck with photos. I will try when the missus gets home. Will try the diesel trick but we have some foul smelling rust breaker shit here at work which seems to work like magic. I will drench it in that and see how I go. Bolt head is unmarked. Its where the firing pin and bolt head meet the bolt that is rusted solid.

There may be a BCG coming up for sale in the for sale section if we can talk the owner into breaking up his 300BLK AR.
I would just get a that/new one and make sure you clean and oil the new one!

you will likely need a replacement pin that keeps the bolt head captive and new spring on the extractor

just fix it up and enjoy the patina and street cred

springs and pins are cheep from engineering suppliers

Normally I am fastidious but unfortunately all this was outside of my control. I did not have access to this stuff for quite a while due to a lapsed license and other dramas. License back now and cleaning up the mess. This is the worst thing. Second was a failed bottled of boretech copper stored with brass and ammunition

    Rusted bolt carrier group

    If it’s blued, you may have a hell of time but still try as per below;
If it’s titanium, Teflon or stainless, soak it in solvent (preferably barrel solvent) for a few days. Heard Coke works as well (Never tried it though). Once/if you can, break it down and repeat the process, then hit it with some barrel brushes or wire toothbrushes.
Lastly check for pitting, hopefully there is none, otherwise it’s scrap metal if it’s on critical parts.

Might pay to tie the Ar15 you build to a stick and pull the trigger a few meters away.

Then inspect it. Just as a precaution

Degrease it with alcohol or acetone, then soak overnight in vinegar.

I'm expecting this to be this last bit. Lucky I did this to the only rifle I own with a replaceable bolt.

Going to soak it in this stuff Name: blaster-lubricants-grease-funnels-16-pb-64_1000.jpg

If it works on tractor exhaust manifold bolts, it may work on my rifle bolt.

that stuff is pretty good or mix meths and atf together that works as well if just the bolt head is badly corroded you could just replace that
