    Savage .308 barrel replacement question

I may or may not need to replace the barrel on my Savage 10FP-LEA.

It's not shooting how it used to but then again I virtually never clean it, it might just be full of copper. It's just steadily getting worse and won't hold MOA anymore.

Just wondering what a new barrel would be worth, would prob prefer to get another Savage one but will definitly consider a Trueflight, Vulcan etc. It's a heavy profile barrel but not a truck axle. What would it cost to fit?

Does anybody have a bore scope for hire?

Sounds like a good dose of copper solvent would be the first option.

    Gunworks pricing here

Clean it,if its done over 5thousand rounds it could be starting to wear... maybe... just a little.

Check all the obvious stuff screws mounts etc take out of stock and clean all those hidden spots particularly bedding areas.

Savage, give it the business with some JB paste, that might solve it.

Before replacing the barrel, get someone with a borescope to have a good look.

A lot of barrels can get a quick fix second lease on life. if its just throat erosion, you could get a gunsmith to trim a bit off the shoulder and thread and redo the chamber.

Bore tech eliminator does a very good job of getting rid of copper

Meh!, shrug your shoulders and start shoving 303 projectiles down it, might not even need to fully neck sized for them. Takes up the slack in the barrel dontcha know.....

Unless you are running very hot loads you should get 5000+ out of a 308w hunting barrel, maybe even 10k.

So I'd give it a hard/long clean with a carbon cleaner only to start with. Im of the view that copper helps and not hinders so I dont aim to remove copper. Few ppl agree with me on that, cleaning the barrel til spotless of copper but there you go. I also dont excessively clean, if the first shot is a fouling shot and can vary from the rest that should be telling you something IMHO ie too clean = bad.

You can also get an upper cylinder (car engine) de-carbonising oil from repco ($15?). You could try soaking the barrel in that overnight (even for a week) to soften the carbon, clean after soaking, repeat for some time.

I'd suggest a good quality barrel from a known maker, unknown barrels have been known to fail and injure and a first rate barrel can improve the accuracy of a gun.
