For 30 cal we use 9/16ths but for 7mm down something like 14x1 or 1/2. Yes you need a decent shoulder, but you also have to watch that the bottom of the cut for the thread is not too close to the bore. There is not a lot of metal between the two when 1/2 is used on a 30cal......So in answer to the question, the thread used will be dependant on what bore size it is being put onto.
