On a centre fire it would be advisable to stay away from 1/2 20TPI - it takes too much off the barrel.

Thread dimension will be determined by barrel diameter less a suitable shoulder for can to screw up against. Always go max size never down.

Ask DPT.He did tell us what he did on our rifles but I forgot.Fussy bastard. Get your manufacturer to do it to avoid heart ache unless you are a whiz on the lathe.

For 30 cal we use 9/16ths but for 7mm down something like 14x1 or 1/2. Yes you need a decent shoulder, but you also have to watch that the bottom of the cut for the thread is not too close to the bore. There is not a lot of metal between the two when 1/2 is used on a 30cal......So in answer to the question, the thread used will be dependant on what bore size it is being put onto.

    Thanks for all the info.
my reason for asking is that I want to inport silencers and want to start of with the most common thread .
1/2 20 unf looks like the norm ?
But I also think the M14 16 and 18X1 is a better choice
hope this makes my question understandable

    Hi,

We do provide quite a large number of different threads, both metric and inch, due to various reasons.

However here are our general recommendations if the muzzle is unthreaded:

    | Ase Utra

    Tuukka Jokinen
    Ase Utra sound suppressors

1/2 by 20 would be most common on rimfires and reasonably common in centre fires.
Hard thing with centrefires in depends on barrel width to what thead places like DPT will do, then different manufacturers do different threads depending of its for American or European market.

Correct me if im wrong, but I believe the Tikka CTR has an imperial thread and the Tactical a metric one.

Yep. CTR uses standard american 5/8-24 thread, and the heavy barrel Tikka /Sako uses M18x1.0mm. Just sent special orders of my brakes to Oz for both of these models this week. The CTR is getting popular there but hasn't been promoted much here yet.
Everyone has the right to their own opinion, but that doesn't mean that every opinion is right.

I WOULD have liked a CTR in .260 Rem, but the 20" barrel length puts me off buying one, would rather go for a Super Varmint.
Wish that the Tactical came in .260 like the CTR.
