    Spend my money

    Well hypothetically spend it....

A Mates looking for his first centerfire rifle-scope
    Rough budget of 2.5-2.7k
    Wants to buy new
    Not a tikka.
    Hunting in Canterbury tops/southern alps

Any constructive suggestions? Hes going to head in and shoulder a few.
Just finding it hard to find a combo. Is it better to buy a sako a7 and a vx1 or say a howa and get a vx3 etc

Not wanting to start to many arguments

    Cheers!

My suggestion is not to limit himself to only new if he wants the most bang for his buck.

Hardest thing seems to be what scope to look at , around the 800-1k mark they all seem pretty good . Is their certain things to consider or does it come down to personal preference ?

Spend $800-$1000 on the rifle and the rest on the scope.

+1 for what @gadgetman said - plenty of very good 2nd had rifles & scopes come up for sale. You'll get much more bang for your buck 2nd hand. That 7mmSAUM that @llewelyn would be a damn fine candidate.

Ill second that.all my rifles shotties are 2nd hand and i dont regret one bloody minute of it.theyre not the flashiest arms in town ,but then again Im just"whatever floats the boat"
on the day if im in the mood theyll do the job as good as the next man!
ive never yest been able to distinguish between a nail hit with 100yrold hammer and a nailhit with a flash new mitre 10 jobbie.either way the bastrd of a thing usually takes some getting out!
No I dont mean bloody howitzer nail guns-some chippies looklike rambo with an m60 when theyre weilding those things!!! Im with gadgets TR anyhow -us cack handers are truly a rare and gifted segment of humanity(ducks for cover as insults are hurled)

I'll add my bit to what others have mentioned
Rifles come and go but a good scope stays with you to be put on the next rifle
Buy a scope of choice, you have 2.7K send 1.2-3-4 on a scope, keep and eye here some good scopes come for sale
A second hand good brand rifle with a fine scope will easily do the job.

If you want new, Howa's, Browning Abolt 3's and other brands come in at under what you'd have left.
The exception would be if some one has a fine secondhand rifle on here for sale at a good price eg sako or similar for damn good price. Grab that and sort the scope later.
Either way you'll only then you only have to figure the caliber of choice for the hunting he plans to do

    And....... Guess what.....
We are experts at that as well .
