    Sub calibre insert

I have been browsing trademe and the guncity website as you do in this no man's land time of year between Christmas and new years.
I came across these sub calibre inserts that fit into a 12ga shotgun, not a new invention I know.
But it got me thinking if you fired say a .45acp round from one of these, would the 12ga barrel beyond the insert act in some way as a suppressor?

My thinking being it would give the expanding gas somewhere to go before it erupts from the end of the barrel?
Any thoughts on how quiet a .410 fired from one of these would be? Thought it could be good for possums on the lifestyle block and keeping the noise down.

Interested to hear anyone's experience with these.

Sort of......bit of insulation tape over muzzle helps....it's definitely not earsplitting loud ,but long shotgun barrel helps with that too....not so much when you saw it off short to save weight.

    Hey Dan 88
went this way to damax and had the inserts set up to match my barrel [found the barrels vs the insert where not that close in dia ]
didnt noticed that much sound reduction from memory [long long time ago ] but i had Darren [ FSS ] machine up baffles ,spacers etc to match each insert i had
single shot was fitted with an overbarrel suppressor outer tube . 32 acp will be quieter smaller exit hole

That's what I thought also, it'll be quite! Nope, 45 acp in a 12G coach gun is bloody loud!

i made a suppressor for a 12 g years ago out of plastic down pipe and end caps. had a smaller peice running through it with lots of 12 mm holes drilled in it. taped to the barrel it worked well with down loaded shells

The subsonic .22lr is bloody hard to beat for being quiet and is just about ideal for possums....

I doubt it I've used a 9mm luger insert and it's loud, probably as loud as the pistol. 45 acp is subsonic so that may help but it will still be LOUD

Yea got a .22, just always a bit warry of shooting up into trees with it, miss and the projectiles go along way, there are houses not to far away from the shelter belt that houses the most possums.

Thats where the PCP air rifles step up, quiet, accurate, & 1/3 of lr power, easily get the job done.
