    suppressor for 17hmr

    Hello.

I'm thinking I should suppress my 17hmr to make it more neighbour friendly as well as nicer on my ears.

I'm in Morrinsville near Hamilton, and wondering what good gun smiths are near, who I can get to thread my barrel.
I spose I could ship it to get it done if no where local is any good.

What is the average sorta price to expect for a barrel threading?
I wouldn't mind getting a suppressor I can also put on my centrefires too. Is it worth buying a separate smaller/lighter one just for the 17?

I don't know anything about suppressors so any wisdom shared would be great.

    Thanks

    DPT in Tokoroa.
    Light, effective, well priced.

Go forth and purchase, happiness will be yours.

    Hmm ill look into that.
I see gun works do a really short light one, as well as a cheaper 6" one, and they can do barrel threading but they are miles away.
Hushpro is just in Auckland and they seem to be a bit cheaper, as well as cheaper for threading.

Is there any gunsmiths in Hamilton that anyones used? Or should I just send it away somewhere?

Those DPT ones look great, can't believe how light they are. Seem to be a pretty good price too compared to other makes.
I think I'll give them a ring tomorrow, and maybe ask Santa for one.

Do you have one on a 17hmr? Do you use it with the full 5 spacers, or does it work well still with less of them?

Hi Beetroot, I have a sturdy little Ruger HMR. I think it's a M77/17 and I supressed it last year. Standard weight barrel. I think the thing to look at is what sort of shooting do you want to do and by that I mean walking or driving/quads. They are all darn good at suppressing sound and fab for your ears and your mates ears. I got improved accuracy as well but I also did a trigger job too which was the best thing I did for accuracy. I chose an MAE stainless because I very rarely walk with it as usually on the quad and the extra weight settles nicely on target. If I was to walk a lot I would choose a Dan Hardy as they weigh nothing and a dream to clean. Keep safe in the hills!!

I have a dpt modular one on my 17Hmr. Brilliant. You have to use all 5 as using less is for the .22 rimfire. he will thread it as well. 14cm long and weighs 90 grams, I dont notice it.
$110 for suppressor - $60 to thread, - $30 to chop and recrown.

Dan hardy ones are 3 cm smaller,100 grams and one piece(the muzzle forward ones) But cost $155 for the can alone,$220 fitted.

Wish I had got it done 3 years earlier.

The Dpt looks like it's the best suppressor cost, weight and useability wise. A lot lighter than the Gun works and Hushpro ones, and the ability to shorten it for a 22 is pretty cool.
I think the price has gone up a bit since you got yours though.

Have you tried it on your 17 with less baffles? Or does it not take the harshness out enough with only 1, 2 or 3 baffles.

Have Dan Can over barrel on our 17 Quad. Also had a Gunworks muzzle forward one but it was too heavy and the sound suppression was not great. Think the baffles go in the Dan Can's far quicker than he reckons. Have a Dan Can MK 11 on our 223 but it is losing its sting. The Quad is chopped and has a nice balance. The Gunwork's Spartan is a direct result[read competition] I think of the Tok Special.

Yes, the DPT cans are $130, my mistake. Sorry.

Yes I have tried them with 5 or 4 or 3 baffles. You need all 5 as with 4 its just as loud as with no can. You can get away with just can or just can with sub .22.

If you use an alloy can for a fast centre fire such as a .223 then it wont last long ive found as they start getting noiseier after a while and cleaning them out does nothing.

Alloy Can or alloy baffles? as compared with stainless baffles. The energy and heat must do something to the alloy baffles if you are over 3k.

The DPT suppressors are brilliant. Very light. Short (not the shortest but close) and modular. No NZ manufacturer can offer this other than Darren at present. Plus he is very well priced and a good bloke to deal with. For a 17 I could not think of a better can to use. I have one on my 243 AI and will buy one again to replace a Gunworks on my 7mm08.
The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds

Another plus for Darren at DPT.
