I rate hardys, and Greystone. I like Greystone 6k for quietness
IMO your better off saving a couple hundred and get a dpt or similar and spending extra on scope if you haven’t already got sorted.
Here is a list of suppressors I have used.
DPT: Quiet, light, fat, can be disassembled.
MAE and Waitaki: Quiet, absorbs more recoil, very heavy, probably will outlast other brands.
Gunworks 35: Slim, very long, quiet, absorbs recoil.
Hardy Gen 4: Noisiest of all, most expensive of all, fairly compact
Sonic 40: Quiet, slim, fairly light, absorbs recoil, can be disassembled. Cheapest of all.
I have to say my favourite overall is the Sonic 40. It does have these little grooves on the baffles that will trap dirt, but ok once you put a neoprene cover over it.
north island...DPT
South island...Gunworks....one of the many sizes will suit your needs.
job done.
others may be fly shit smaller, lighter, quieter MAYBE....but these two have been in game for some time and both are great folks to deal with.
I have Waitaki's on my rifles. They are very quiet, but it's like having a VW beetle attached tobthe front of the rifle.
If I have to start over again, Gunworks would be my first and last stop!!
I sell and fit a great many Danish, Stealth and Sonic suppressors. I have had nothing but great feedback from customers in terms of performance and price
Whilst they are of the segmented design they have two key important features, that being a built in stainless steel muzzle break (with helical venting to keep screwed up tight). The other significant feature is that each segment has a small stainless steel liner around the bore.
This offers significantly better wear resistance to just anodised aluminium.
I really like my Dpt and think they are great value so much so that I have at least 5 of them
There are other great ones but I still show a preference to dpts and use the heck out of the ability to swap baffles which often means when I get a new rifle I can assemble a suppressor from what I have on hand

DPT
I've had a few different ones, my main one now is an A-Tec Optima
There's an A-Tec for sale on here at the moment that would be an awesome buy is you have a larger chambering.
Great info guys, I've purchased an older sako 7-08 m951 22" that came with a very long suppressor and threaded at 9/16 [14.2mm].
Wasn't the for me, moa was fine but way too long and cumbersome, so im getting it re threaded at 18" to 14mm.
The local shop is thrashing the hardy but its good to know other options.
Many thanks
My Gunworks suppressor was made in 1997. Still works absolutely fine. A bit heavier than most, but a bit quieter than most, as lightness and shortness became a bit of a fad post 2010.
I was disappointed in how loud my DPT was, despite buying 2 extra baffles for it. I think my Gunworks spoilt me:ORLY:
I wouldnt rate Hardy suppressors at all.
Had one on my AR.
One of the fancy AR specific ones.
Against a mates DPT on his 16" and my Hardy with its 20" barrel.
The Hardy was not what I'd call hearing safe and the DPT dorked on it for a fraction of the cost.
A tech are superbly made and very nice.
ASE are mint also and would out do the aluminum ones for obvious reasons.
If you wanted the best for weight and noise reduction.
Hands down Oceania defense. 3d printed titanium suppressors. I had mates who had them on AR's and now a few who do a fair bit of Tops. They really rate the light weight and how effective they are. Plus they have a ratchet lock system which you will never bump. If I had the coin I'd grab one for all 3 rifles myself.
Shultz and Larsen thunderdome if sound suppression is your 1st 2nd and 3rd priority. Is fairly bulky though. Best all round can is the dpt for cost and ODL for cost no object.
ASE if you're dumping mags through it relatively quickly as they're hard wearing
No experience with greystone, gun works is pretty old tech now but still work alright and every Hardy's I've ever seen is overpriced with poor sound suppression. No idea why people still buy them.
Fyi dpt is a copy of the sonic which is a copy of the s&l.
A-Tec. Love their A-lock function 1/4 turn its on/off the barrel.
Hardy have worked well for me. Gen 5 & 6 on my lever actions and a gen 5 stealth that moves between a 243 and sons 223 bolt actions. Really quiet.
The shorter ones have some of the least overhang out the front of the barrel avaliable, (Well they did when I got them.)
Have seen a big influx of new brands over the last 2-3 years and more exotic materials as well that has made it harder.
Feel that my Hardy works better that what the 3 guys I shoot regularly with use.
Still this is so subjective as you can't compare a 223 with a 308 or even 2x 223 with different barrel lengths or bullet weights......

I would not touch anther Hardys again. As mentioned before DPT or Gunworks. I will be getting one to replace the Hardys I have as they wont fix it (even though I explained it was 2nd hand and I did not expect it to be done as a warranty job- ) I get soot on the outside of my barrel after every use even if only one shot is fired.... I understand sometimes things are not perfect- but it is how a person deals with defect and mistakes that is important to me and when I spoke to them he flat out told me that his suppressors wont do that....Well I can tell you its not the barrel doing it.....As a matter of fact, I had someone else wh is familiar with these things take a look at it and there is visible swarf in the join where the barrel sleeve threads into the muzzle fitting on the suppressor.....Probably a simple fix that has cost him a customer
When I replace it I will be getting a gunworks one - no question. If I was closer to DPT they would be in with a chance, but shipping hassles etc mean I go local for that now.
I have a Chinese monocore sup on one centre fire rifle and it is actually better than any baffle type I have seen or used and was only $80
@shift14
Nope. I got distracted put suppressor on and never clicked it round. Its quite impresive. I hit where i was aiming with projectile too with no baffle strike which was quite supprising.
I imagine most have seen this but here is a link to the NZ Rod & Rifle Suppressor Test. Makes for interesting and somewhat scientific reading

I have an A-Tec Optima and it is noticeably quieter than my mates Gunworks suppressor. I also have an older (about 10 years) Greystone which is okay, but Stuart was such a dickhead to deal with I’d never go back.
What was the recoil like? Richard at Serious Shooters launched one off a 45/70 years ago by shooting slow burning powder out of a v short barrel, and filling the can with unburned powder (I seem to remember that as the explanation - apologies if I misremember). Eventually it ignited in the suppressor and tried to reach escape velocity.
The bruise was impressive.
I've tried pretty much all the suppressors mentioned, minus the A-tec optima. You guys seriously need to try the S&L thunderdome. It's amazing. I've now got 3 of them.
I have all that has been stated above.
DPT - Good value, strong, but old tecnology and not the quietest. Plus my baffles went far too early on my 308. Stores push them as they are like a lego set and offer good margin.
Hardy - Good suppression and weight. I must be lucky as i have had over a dozen with no issues.
A Tec - The best by far. The lock system is great, but the actual suppressor design is second no none and is deadly quiet. Downside is it is 150mm muzzle forward.
Gunworks - Great people to deal with, but suppressors are old school washers, not that quiet and heavy. Plus it was on a nice high end Sako and it rubbed the bluing off.
Waikati - great to smack nails in with - about all i need to say
ASE - these are great as well. I have used the Radien and is a seriously good unit.
S&L is a great unit as well. Havnt used it but have seen it in action. Very similar in design to the A tec.
I've blown up a stealth and a an mate has too threads are crap back off 1/4 turn and have heaps of play on multiple guns I checked both on and were being supplied with big oversislzed rear bushes absolute heaps of shit poor machining cost, used most others and all have been good mainly run dpt ones, magnum non magnum with and without blast baffels they seem to go well
Advice? Just PM Friwi. Very helpful and knowledgeable b'stard. Probably because he works at DPT. Need a hip replacement? Do you operate on yourself. Save yourself some grief. Get the best advice. 2C.
Ffs, I don’t know what some of you do with your suppressors to go through so many. Pest control work on goats, pigs, deer, etc, suppressors are good for 5000 rounds or so. The suppressor wore out/carboned-up about the same time as a Ranger/CJA AR15 or the barrel got worn on other rifles. I guess punching paper or targets is a bit harder on them but seriously, over a dozen Hardy’s plus others. I’ve used Wairau cans and Gunworks over barrel with no problems. Used Sonic 45 & 35, they work but not so impressed. Guess I’ll stick with what I know works for me, Gunworks or Waitaki Engineering. As an aside, if you think ones a bit heavyweight do some feckin weight training, a slightly muzzle heavy rifle never hurt.
My 2 cents worth. I've tried several, Gunworks, DPT, Maniatis, Ghost, Hardy Compact, Hardy Stealth and MAE, I rate them for noise suppression in this order:
Hardy Stealth.....quietest of the lot, longer in front but that's where the suppression comes from, no free lunches.
Gunworks........quiet, cheaper than the Stealth above, again longer in front but worth it, as above.
Maniatis... light, good suppression but not as quiet as the above.
DPT....depends on how many baffles you use and at $50 per baffle how far do you go, tried 6 baffles, still not as quiet as the Hardy Stealth or Gunworks.
Hardy Compact and Ghost, nope, noisy compared to the rest.
That's how I found them, only Hardy Stealths and Gunworks in my cupboard these days.
Anyone tried the atec optima 50 with the muzzle break in cap?
I'm thinking of getting one to help with recoil management.
I have a Sonic 45 on my .308 and I really rate it. Easy to clean, good suppression, very well made and comes with a free thread protector.
Oceania defence ratchet lock, buy once cry once 😅
I have the A-TEC H2 with muzzle brake in the cap on a 300 win mag. That was a game changer for me with reduction in recoil (is slightly better than hardy magnum suppressor for recoil and noise reduction). Previously I was getting blasted by muzzle blast and dust from the factory muzzle brake I had. I get none of that now with the atec. The H2 is fine for hunting but does get hot quick if at the range. I have been careful to take time and reasonably manage temp between shots, but have noticed some minor corrosion/pitting starting to develop. Probably no different than any alloy suppressor, so if the optima has stainless inserts I would go for that.
I have used, gunworks, hardys, dpt, atec, b&t, ase.
Like many have mentioned, the dpt is the best value for money.
ASE utra is very robust, but heavy.
I use a B&T starlight on a 308 win. It has stainless internals is well built, and has better noise suppression than dpt or hardys, but costs more.
I'll message him to confirm but old man does commercial pest control and waro and he was saying the other day one of his ar15's is due a new barrel as it's over 20,000 rounds and "starting to lose its edge just a wee bit"
I'm pretty sure that rifle has had the same Oceania defence on it since day one also....
