    Sweaty Box

    Everytime I put the Mrs shotgun into her Buffalo River box that has fur inside it, it gets a sweat on - massive condensation on the gun
    Thought the box may have been damp when I 1st got it, so its been sat in the sun for ages so should be sweet

    Is it just what furry boxes do? I dont have any other furry ones to compare

    The answer lays in the name given to the citizens of Brazil.
    It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
    What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
    Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
    Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
    Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
    Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
    Rule 5: Check your firing zone
    Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
    Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

    fur = leather.
    leather = moisture.
    plus fur in itself holds moisture like crazy.
    lose the fur - you'll lose the moisture problem.

    the other issue is venting - whatever moisure present is not escaping.

    Personally I'd doubt that sunlight would be adequate - try hot water cupboard, and don't close the box

    and did you know NZ possum fur was used for gunsights on british miliary aircraft during WW2?

    Thought you might be.

    I asked my Mrs (out of the blue) as we were walking into the airport 'I wonder why your box is so sweaty'
    Should have seen her face hahah
    THEN I tweaked and realised what I;d said with no context and we both pissed ourself laughing haha

    Ok, now that we've taken the piss...

    Mitre 10, get some DampRid

    Then start collecting those descicant silica gel sachets that you get in tablet bottles and chuck a couple in the gunbox.

    I'm glad to see that the thread WAS to do with the serious issue of sweat on gun.

    Dessicants will help. But - sweating is where you have moisture-laden atmosphere cooling on contact with (in this case) precious gun barrel. Long term storage of any weapon in closed bag not a good idea - even stainless will stain.

    I'd leave the box open in hotwater cupbaord for several weeks even - I presume the lining was an after-market bling job? there could be moisture trapped in the box material, or the adhesive used, or as I said before, the fibres.

    A cheap 40W towel rail could be installed in your gun cupbard (but don't use to dry wet stuff on!). remember, the moisture laden air must be able to escape.

    I have no issues with moisture in the safe or any cases- its just this box
    Its a fitted breakdown shotgun case - will take a pic later and post
    i suspected moisture orginally, but it was left open in afternoon sun for ages and should have been more than dry I would have though
    I've been saving the Silica Gel packets for a while as was going put one in each die box that doesnt get much use

    I was just about to suggest a few of those silica gel "DO NOT EAT" (because they look so tasty ) sachets. I came into some large ones not so long ago (about palm sized) which I've placed around my storage area. Perhaps it is a chemical reaction between the firearm and the box that's causing moisture to form?
