It also depends on how long the scope is and the degree of taper in the front bell. On a long or gently tapering scope (like the one pictured above), you tend to get better clearance because the fat bit is further away from the action and hanging over the (lower) barrel. So a long scope like a swaro z5 3.5-18x44 has better clearance than a short stubby kahles 3-9x42.
