    Takedown Single Shot Rifle

I am looking at single shot breakopen rifles as I want a rifle which I can takedown to carry in a case along the toptube on my mountain bike for Tahr, Chamois and Deer hunting as my Winchester Model 70 Featherweight .270 is too nice to knock around on the bike.
First off I got interested in a Harrington and Richardson Topper in 30-30 shooting pointy 120 grainers, then I got interested in the Baikal ($399 new!) in .243 or maybe 308 with lighter bullets, I intend cutting the barrel to 20 inches so it will fit in a small pack for other hunts.
Does the Baikal fit normal .22 rimfire scope rings?
What happens to the chrome bore when I cut the barrel.
Is anyone else using any of these rifles and what are your thoughts?

A Baikal would be a good choice, however you need an adapter rail like this to fit a weaver mount to them.

The chrome bore will survive a barrel chop and recrown no problems.

I own two Baikals, a .222 and a .223 both shoot well, the triggers are not flash but they are not as crappy as most people make them out to be.

I've taken Goats out to 150m so far with both of them.

BTW I Paid $300 each including the scope mounts and 3-9x40 scopes. Check out Trade Me or advertise on the Forum.

    Cheers

Reloaders sell an integrated dovetail and ring mount for $69, working fine for me.

I've cut mine down to 18 inches. Good bush gun, bombproof.

Thanks for the reply I will get a 308 or a 243, not sure which yet. Anyone got any ideas which I should go for as I have had nothing ro do with 243 and I am not sure how a 100gr boatail would go out of a short 20" barrel. I have hunted with .222 Brno Fox and .270 model 70 Win Featherweight all nearly all my life

243s are a great caliber, and it will kick less. it wont do as well with a short barrel tho

mine is 18 inch and even then it makes people unconfortable to think of all the velosity loss, 20 inch would be fine it will kill well

308 will do better on bigger animals
