I'm a real sucker for a potentially accurate 22, but after 10+ years of 'sifting' through at least 20 rifles and new addition has to have pretty impeccable credentials!
There have been two of the renowned Remington 541-Ts past through here, one very fine example courtesy of the fellowship of the forum and although both were very nice rifles, neither shot well enough to be interesting. So I was sort of done with them as they reside pretty firmly in the higher price brackets.
So recently during a late night scan of the Gun City used listings I was a bit surprised to see a 541-T listed as a "parts rifle" at a extremely modest price. A check of the listing revealed it was missing a magazine, but no problem, there was another rifle here with one that would fit. With no great expectations I hit the Buy button.
The rifle that arrived was practically new, I doubt it had fired much more than a box of ammo. It had a bit of cosmetic rust on the bottom metal, and a few safe garks on the stock. It was fitted with a pretty decent Tasco "High County" 4-16 AO scope in period correct Weaver rings (yuk). But it was sighted in and seemed to want to shoot. In common with a rifle stored since the 1990s the trigger was badly gummed up with dried grease but a decent clean and some minor adjustments revealed a pretty decent let-off.
@nor-west has been visiting and we shot most of the better 22s in the racks (there is some doubt as to who shot the best scores, I'm prepared to call it a draw even though I'm sure the 10mm gong moved at my shot and not from wind). We shot the 541 a bit and it went pretty well with Norma Tac-22.
Did I say wind, we have had it in spades here but when Nor-West left at lunch time he may have taken it with him. Tonight was dead calm so a bit late for best light (8.30ish) I headed out with some RWS Pistol Match and some Eley Match. It's safe to say this 541-T won't be going anywhere soon, 6 groups shot, the largest with PM at 15.3mm, and the smallest with Eley Match at 8.3mm, average well under 0.5".
Dang but rifles can be fun!
