Thread: Threading a noodle? Kimber barrel

Anyone threaded a kimber Montana for suppressor? If so, what thread? I’d like to suppress my 7wsm, but a bit nervous about meat around the bore (lack of). I’m ok to cut a few inches off the barrel (24” factory) but the OD still won’t get much more than about 14mm. Not trying to turn this into a bushpig - got a 308 for that, just hoping to protect the hearing of me, my boy and the dog.

Any experience from you guys?

I had my Kimber threaded 14x1 (308) - the factory thread was a stupidly small from memory and 14x1 was an easy remedy.

Ask DPT, they’ll know

I'd recon you'd be able to do 1/2×28 or even M13x1. Ive done M12x1 on some skinny barreled Winchesters, but would not advise to go smaller than that.

From memory there should be enough meat for a 14x1 . But we have also done 13x1, 1/2-28 and 1/2-20.

my 300WSM Montana was threaded 14x1 by DPT however the barrel was also shortened by 4 inches at the same time

Don't go near 1/2" or it could bell out

14x1 would be ideal

my 7 08 kimber is 9\16 x 18 20 in barrel

also got a 270wsm kimber with a ½ in thread full length barrel. No problems.

I had a .308 Kimber but did have problems.
My rifle's barrel diameter was .56” about 14,2mm, at the tip. But most suppressor manufacturers say that in order to support a 1/2x28 thread, you need a minimum thickness of .6”, (explains why Kimber’s factory thread is 7/16x28).
However, in order to reach .6” diameter, you need to cut the barrel to about 18” (no go).

With Kimber threading the barrel to 7/16x28, the tip of the barrel ended up with a wall thickness of about 1/16”. Pretty thin.
I ended up buying a thread adapter that increases the thread pitch from 7/16” to 5/8”. It's a more universally accepted suppressor thread and the adapter adds strength and rigidity to the barrel tip by relying on the threaded shoulder to support the weight of the suppressor rather than the 1/16” thick barrel tip.

altho 1/2-20 works fine on the three I have, I have been told that its not the best

The biggest 'problem' was that it was a .308...

Mine is 14x1 but i have cut it short (14")

Thanks all, I’m not keen on 1/2”, will give DPT a call to discuss when I get a chance. Not sure how you can get a 14mm thread on a barrel with ~14mm OD as thought you needed a shoulder for the supp to pull up against.
