Thread: threading odd muzzle

Bought a new 10/22 from gun city in 2011 which came with an internally threaded barrel and an adapter that screwed into it to attach a suppressor to. My experience with that particular rifle and that system was less than satisfactory. Whoever carried out the work didnt align the threading/adapter very well and it had a habit of shaving microscopic particles of lead of the projectiles as they passed through. It did however give good patterns at 50yds with a 10 shot group. I ended up tapering the inside of the adapter with a dremel at the action end of it which improved it some. Finding the right ammo also helped for some strange reason. Finally sold the rifle, scope, suppressor, sling, gun bag and 200 rounds of winchester subs to a guy that wanted a 'plinker' for his son to learn to shoot with at a greatly discounted price to help him out

All the above to say that if you are going to get it done, get a professional to do the threading is my view.........he can make the adapter at the same time.

(As an aside, I saw a second hand 10/22 in the same shop about 12mths ago.....checked the serial number and it was a very early model so I bought it and got it externally threaded.
Sighted in at 75m it gives me .5 inch 5 shot groups if i do my part.)

Perhaps we should look outside the square on this one. If you like the way the muzzle looks just pick up another Toz with the straight muzzle and and thread that or use a slip on. You could swap the barrelled actions in and out of the same stock if that rings your bell. Would be a lot cheaper than any of the other options. Muzza alluded to this above.

well agricultural me.....looked at picture and thought...find bolt threaded 1/2"-20 and cut the head off it,see how snugly it fits smooth shaft size into mouth of muzzle bell....drill largest hole through guts of bolt you can without going off centre or hitting threads....6-7mm would be ideal....smooth off the end you cut bolt head off as best you can,slide it into mouth of bell,right up hard against muzzle,insert fattest cleaning rod that will slide down barrel from breach end and see it clears insert properly,if not make another untill it will do....tape in place for testing...try a shot and see if nothing touches and projectile hits target.when happy that is all good...screw suppressor onto insert and try cleaning rod again....posibly loctite insert into place....and you should be away laughing....MUCH easier to make one up with lathe...but if you just happen to have lots of time on your hands,and a bolt of right diameter and thread....

Thought of doing this. A 1/2 inch bolt is much wider than the inside diameter of the bell so I'll have to drill it out but thats where I'm worried about stuffing it up, drilling on the piss or/and drilling off center, then taping thread the same. I'd only have one chance of getting it right. If that work then to make an insert I'd take a 1/2x20 bolt as you said, cut down to appropriate length and drill hole all way though and more than wide enough for projectile to pass though, that would be the easy part.

you DONT make hole bigger...you make bolt smaller..... and you dont need to thread it..slip fit and glued in place was my thoguht...if your internal diameter isnt big enough to fit a bolt of say 9mm diameter...you going to struggle to drill 6-7mm hole through it. but Friwi has offered to help.....so you have option to sort it.

If I was doing it, I would have the last 6cm of barrel bore indicated perfectly concentric in the lathe and then all the work would be single point cut . The outside profile of those barrels not always being the straightest to indicate from.
