    Upgrade the scope first then. When you will have streched to the limits of the capacity of your 7-08 then you might look at spending on a bigger boomer .

    South island also has plenty of spots where a short carbine is handy, I have a 20" 708 and a 24" 7RM and I live 15min from mount cook,
    If I were you I'd just buy a 7RM and have both, you don't want to lug around you long range tahr ring all the time.
