Thread: Tikka T1 or CZ 455

I am looking to buy a decent 22 rimfire and have come down to the Tikka t1 MTR or a CZ varmint - anyone own or has shot both can make a recommendation ?

The Lithgow is a nice, but the trigger isn’t any good and allegedly the aftermarket option isn’t suitable.

CZ457 is my pick. I’ve got a T1X 16” and it’s a laser.

CZ 457 that I have played with (MTR & Royal) were both very nice.

My Lithgow LA101 is the most accurate 22, aside from my smallbore rifle, that I have owned. More accurate than an Anschutz 1700, a CZ 455 or a Weihrauch HW 66 Production that I had. The last 3 have all gone. The CZ 455 was an utter lemon. The Lithgow is a match for my Walther KK Silo but they are quite different rifles. With the 455 I could write several chapters on what I tried to get it to perform. Both the Anschutz and the Weihrauch were "pretty" rifles that I was afraid to work rough.

Not sure what the aftermarket option issue mentioned is but yes the Lithgow trigger is not as light out of the box as I would like it. The aftermarket kit from Delta in Oz improved it out of sight. The CZ 455 trigger wasn't great either until I fitted a Yo-Dave kit.

Eyeballed CZ MTR and Royal the other day. One was 22 and the other a 17. Both very nice rifles. Totally different to the 452s and the 455s.
The 22 didn't group as well as my Lithgow but it was only early days for the owner. The 17, like most 17s shot very well.

If going the CZ path and not wanting the 457 I would look for a good second hand 452.

It depends on what the OP is looking for as end use. My Lithgow being a fairly solid beast is not the rifle I would cart around shooting bunnies. My old BRNO Model 1 is perfect for that.

I have no experience with the TX1, others can comment on them.

I agree with @zimmer ; regarding the CZ’s. I’m thoroughly impressed with my 452 and would give the 455 a miss, with a view to getting a 457.

Good to hear the trigger job improves the Lithgow. I’m otherwise very impressed with the fit and finish.

I wouldn't go for 452 or a 455 purely for not liking the 90degree bolt lift, I have two 452s and both have given issues with bolt hitting the scope. I also don't like the backwards safety.

The 457 fixes both those issues and has a user adjustable trigger which is nice.

I bought a 16" T1x before the CZ457 was announced, I may have gone CZ route if it were available but I'm entirely happy with the T1x.
Shoots and handles extremely well.

LOP is short on the CZ452 American. Backwards safety is annoying. Factory trigger setup isn't very good. Otherwise, a nice, accurate gun.

I haven't handled the Tikka, but seems to be a lot to like, especially if you own a Tikka centrefire. 16 inch factory threaded barrel is good. The only think I don't like the look of is the extractor wire. Looks a bit weird and flimsy.

My very personal experience and opinion - I let my Tikka go and kept my 455. Tikka plasticky and heavy bolt lift. Also I like the option of swapping barrels in a few minutes at home (applies to 457 too). With not much work my CZ triggers are excellent, spring snipped or replaced, light stoning of sear. But whatever spins your prop..!

Anyone handled the new Howa 1100 22 yet?? It looks pretty fugly but pretty is as pretty does so if they have a decent trigger and shoot . . . . .

I cant speak for the Tikka, never shot one, i had a CZ 455, wasn't very accurate, unlike the my .22 mag CZ 435 lux, just bought a 457, only had it a month, first imprecations, are its very much of an upgrade, from the 455, got a skinner peep coming for it, but it shooting 1.5 inch with irons,
Cooper make sum of the nicest rimfires, you can find for field work, Browning t, bolt is also a solid choice.
