I can’t be bothered shagging around with magnum cases or modifying the bolt face so that rules out any of these new PRC variants.
Tried them just the other day, can't quite recall velocity but will lookit up when I get home.

20" Savage 284W 162 eldm with 2209 - can't remember the powder load off-hand.... 3.00" overall length (max. mag length in the SA Savage)

I also have spare 284 dies I was going to get around to listing, plus some spare brass...

Ar crap, that chrono photo was for 145gn HPBT, not the ELD-M. I was getting around 2750 fps with the 162gn, loaded with 53.5gn 2209.

Only just cheaper than a new Tikka

If you're taking it to gunworks make sure to get the non neck turn reamer.

284 fits perfect with a seated out 162 in a LA tikka mag.

    My 20'' 284 (reamed out 708 tikka) does 2850 with the 162 and RL26 and 2740 with 2209.

I rang them today - they said they had 3 reamers. Do I want the 'largest' being a 318 neck? - I'll be using Lapua brass (likely)

Reloading for me is a necessity, not a hobby, so the less work the better.

@kiwi303 Same build and speeds as mine, what charges are you using of the two different powders out of curiosity? I'm running Norma brass.

My 280 is doing 2865 with Moly coated 162 Amaxes over a pile of N560. I got up to 3020 in load testing but this load is sufficient for my needs and super accurate

Have owned or still own most of the 7mms including 7x64, 284, 280ai, SAUM and most of the 7 magnums. The 284, SAUM & 280ai with 162 pills and the right powder will be so close to 7RM performance that it really doesn’t matter. SAUM & 284 with 22in bbl running RL26 get 3010 - 3020 fps. 284 with RL17 2960 fps, SAUM with RL23 2950 fps. 280ai with 24in bbl running N560 = 2980 fps. My other 284 with 18in bbl runs 162s at 2820-2830 fps with RL17 & 2860 fps with 154 SSTs with SPF. All burning 50 something grains not 70 something grains like you need in 7RM. No brainer really

Yes, CS, if only you could still get RL powders!

I can load up a dummy round tomorrow and check, with once fired Lapua case and 162 eldm. But my current load of 140gn BT in Norma brass is measuring at 0.315". I found the Norma and Lapua brass to have very similar weights and case volume, so neck thickness is probably very close as well.

...but .318" is probably spot on. I just checked some sized cases, the Lapua and Norma are within 0.001" of each other, the Norma slightly larger. But I'll load one up tomorrow morning

as you have noted 2209 can't be doing well in that cartridge - I'm getting the same velocity out of my 20" 7x57 with 2209, so not much gain for the bigger volume.

With regard to the pending rechamber, I'd just stick with the Ackley. It's the best power you'll get in a std .473 boltface.

I shoot the 7 PRCW in competition but the Ackley in my LR hunting rifle does the biz. 2960 with 162 ELD-Xs kills well, three instant kills over the weekend, all over 300yds. What's not to like?

Neck diameter on Lapua 284W brass with 162 eldm is 0.3145", according to my 2 sets of digital calipers. Call it 0.315"

According to GRT, 2209 will be around 30 fps slower than RL17 for same pressure.

I looked a little while back when someone else was thinking of converting their 7x57 to 284W, and came to the conclusion that it wasn't worth it, almost the same if you run the same pressures

The 284W case is not quite the optimum volume for 2209, but 2213SC is too slow.

And its really splitting hairs, either way the velocity is enough to kill stuff dead at realistic maximum ranges, whether its from a 284w, 280 or hot 7x57...
