Thread: Tikka T3 Bottom Metal / Plastic

I have been talking with a company over here that is currently making replacement "bottom metal" for some popular rifles.

One project on the drawing board is the Tikka T3.

This would be a "drop in" part and you would use your standard factory magazine.

Probably AL6061 T6 aircraft grade aluminium and anodized matt black or silver finish.

We are aware that there are a few companies out there making these aftermarket parts but they only accept aftermarket magazines like the Accuracy International.

Some also have a caveat: "Inletting required and recommended to be done by a qualified person"

My limited "market research" would put the current offerings at USD$130 - $200 for the bottom metal and another USD$70 - $90 for an AICS type magazine.

In my humble opinion, that is quite a bit of $$ when you can get a T3 rifle here at USD$550 blued synthetic stock / $700 SS synthetic stock.

QUESTIONS FOR THE TIKKA BRIGADE OR THOSE THINKING ABOUT BUYING A T3.

1 - What caliber T3 are you operating
2 - If interested in a T3 bottom metal (DBM) . . . what is your price threshold in NZD$
a - up to $100
b - up to $120
c - up to $140
d - up to $160

You can also consider this price question in terms of a percentage (%) over the price you paid for the rifle.

They would loose money making them for that price so would be silly.

Like all other kits sell them same price all around 400 450 nz with a small mag, it's not everyone's cup of tea and if you want it price don't really become a issue.

Unless you pre sold a truck load would be pointless selling them cheap

I've got a couple of BDL Rem700's and have often looked at similar options like the H-S Precision system. There run at US$300-350 with one mag, and an additional $80-100 each. This is if purchased in the US, not NZ

Based on other products, I guess this would be around NZ$500-550 if purcahsed from a dealer in NZ. Rem700 aren't an expensive rifle and the additonal cost is hard to justify unless you're a rabbit culler etc how needs fast reloads/multible mags.

It would be nice to have the options on a Tikka.

Double stack would be great, most Ive seen are single only.

The retail price of the generic T3 plastic trigger guard is USD$175 so we would be foolish to price an aftermarket metal replacement at less than that.

The questions I posed about pricing and caliber are now redundant !

I will just add some technical notes.

The Tikka T3 uses a generic action, stock (excluding wood, camo, and HB variants) and trigger assembly (part # S5850175)

The magazine is the same length and width externally. The internal dimensions of the magazine are different to accommodate the various calibers.

We are looking at making one generic bottom metal / trigger guard to replace the generic factory plastic and fit the generic factory synthetic stock.

This would also accommodate the "extended" factory T3 magazines that are available for some calibers.

Get them to make one that takes AR15 mags. You would probably sell a boat load to Australia. If they made them for Canada, then made 30 round mags stamped "Tikka T3 Bolt Action Rifle Mag", you wouldn't be able to make mags fast enough to meet demand.
