That's what everyone here used to say, now a rifle without a can is a rarity, and many hunting guide's demand them. It does mean some people are cutting their dedicated bush rifles back to 16" and then with an over barrel suppressor they finish up with a 19" overall length including the suppressor. Makes shooting so much more pleasant.

ZQL, I guess part of my problem is I’m just old and set in my ways! No doubt there are some advantages to using a suppressor. It will be interesting to see if things change here with the new ruling on cans. I know a few guys here that use them…most of them are using subsonic ammo for night hunting hogs and predators.

A suppressor is a trade off. Like anything else. If I were firing multiple shots a day often, then I see the sense. But if Its one or two shots, then a set of ear plugs or muffs is a lighter weight option that dosnt need a barrel mod/shortening.

Fifteen years ago the 22lr was my only rifle wearing a suppressor....now I only have one centerfire and one 22lr without them. I really do not like my ears ringing anymore. I used shotgun without earmuffs duck shooting,as I can't pick up direction of birds by sound if wearing them.but will slip them on if I have time.the long barrels do help as blast is further away to begin with.

Thats US dollars, but damn their stuff is cheap over there, we are being ripped off.

zeebob/ Can't argue with that, we all are getting older and some things don't need to change. A nice classic S & L or the like should be left alone.
Even with high velocity the can's make a massive difference, reduces the ear damaging blast and confuse game with the location of where the shot came from.
It's also a hunting style thing as well. bush hunters on foot use their ears, as well as their eyes, nose and don't have time to put on ear protection.
Different to say hunting from a blind when you have a bit more time to put on hearing protection.

Fair enough, the modern ones are pretty light though
Without straying into politics I noticed that the current administration has done some work to clear the way for people to get suppressors which is always a good idea - one good reason in favour of them is so that ya dog doesn't go deaf when you're shooting over him/her

I'm all for people having more choices rather than less and it's good to see the States heading that way

Try a set of the Howard Leight electronic muffs, they have an adjustable level of noise that gets through and from what I can tell they must have stereo mics as I always know when Pukeko are flushing left or right etc.. Love my set.

Electronic earmuffs- go too an engineering supply shop. You will find better noise reduction and quality at almost half the price of a camo set.

I plan to get 2 pair of walker game ear muffs. I made the mistake of firing that contender 30-30 in a box blind without having the muzzle outside the window opening. My ears rang for 2 days. Can’t do that again. The game ears have built in hearing amplification but cut off like regular range muff when you shoot.

Probably a better solution for me than a suppressor…I have too many different rifles…

Its the stereo mic part that is most important with hunting ones, most engineering ones only have a mono mic so you cant tell which direction sounds are coming from. Its a pain in the ass to know that something just flushed next to you but not know which direction it was, jumping up like a spinning top to try and find it.

Knock it all you like … it appeals to people with shallow pockets.. at least its available,…and affordable

I could post catalogues of expensive stuff and not even available in kiwi and way cheaper than you’ll ever find and great quality….

Yeah mate they gave a lot of great stuff that is cheap(er)…. Sure your going to get as sone have suggested shit stuff ,I spend 6 months a year over there… I could take you places to buy stuff that would make you dribble compared to what you can get in kiwi…. AT LEAST they cater to shallow pockets …. Don’t knock it!!!…. You don’t have to buy the stuff
