    Visitors Firearm Licence

    Hey Guys,

Finally getting around to planning my trip to NZ to hunt and shoot and I wanted to ask for a bit of advice regarding a Visitors Firearms Licence. In the application I must specify a licenced person to store my firearms (Which I am planning on purchasing in NZ). Is my only option the generosity of those in the shooting and hunting community? Been trawling the internet to find a self-storage service like Kennards, or a range/gun shop that can essentially be my 'sponsor' for my FA.

    Regards,
    foureyes.

P.S I hope that this is in the right part of the forum!

If your shooting with another shooter with an FAL you can be under their direct supervision, means you cannot shoot alone, but could carry a rifle?

Where are you going to be hunting and will you be site seeing as well? With a visitors licence you can do everything a local licenced shooter can do. Which includes shooting un-supervised, travelling to your hunting destination with a rifle and storing it with you in the hut while on the trail.

What you can't do is leave it un-secured in a car/hotel/motel room for any extended period. The laws a bit grey here because if a trip to the hunting grounds includes an overnight stay then the police would prefer you had room service rather than leave it in the room while you get dinner. Basically when the firearm is not secured it needs to be under your supervision.

Are you being guided by a NZ firm? If so, can they look after the rifle while you're not in the bush? Gun shops close to the area you are hunting would be the other logical choice. Will you be keeping the rifle in NZ, sending it home or selling it again after the hunt?

That aside, have you given any thought for how you will sight the rifle in before you hit the bush? If you're starting in Auckland for instance you might find it hard to get some range time in before the hunt.

foureyes, if you need to sight in the rifle in the Auckland area you would be welcome to do that on my property. Just PM me if you would like to arrange this.

What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms
