Top glass isn't any use if you don't know what you are looking for through them, and if you know what you are looking for I don't think the difference in cost between better than average and the most expensive is worth the marginal difference in performance.
The other "wanky" trend is this new notion of being a "professional". It seems that if you don't write for a magazine, or wear sponsor's products, appear in adverts or have the top ten of these people as your "friend" on face book you are no-one. Well, I'm no-one and pretty damned happy being it, thanks.
As far as buying something and then regretting it, I've got a lovely small ring mauser .257R in the gun safe that I will never use. It was an impulse buy. Lovely rifle but I will never use it. Its sitting with a couple of its best friends in the safe, all of them great rifles but all impulse buys. They aren't wanky, but maybe I am.
I particularly like how people set facebook pages about themselves hunting and call themselves "athletes"...
