    Wank factor

Come on, admit it...we've all brought or made something because we thought it was going to be super duper loop the looper uber cool, but in hindsight all it was, was pure "wank factor".

Things like 50cals, huge scopes on hunting rifles with 30+ magnification, Rev rodger suppressors, quad rails and all sorts of attachments on AR15's, Damascus steel knives, tactical .22's.. etc...you know what I mean...come on, come clean, what was it you thought you needed but later realized that it was stupid and pointless.

Let's laugh at ourselves, share your expensive fails. I'll start, I made a varmint rifle once, it had the equivalent of atruck axel for a barrel, a fast twist barrel, a 8-32x56 scope... it was ridiculous for many reasons and I was clueless putting it toghether the way I did, oh that and the fact I lived in Thames where I didnt have access to "varmints". And even if I did I wouldn't have been strong enough to carry it anywhere as it had the ergonomics and weight of an anvil.

I had a 10-50x60 on my Varmint rifle. The rifle was a 223. Problem was at anything over 30 power, qnything in range of the 223 (400m or so) was too close to properly focus on. I could clearly see game like possums and goats out at 1000m but did not think the 223 was ideally matched with it. Got a 6.5-20 on it now. Much better......

Shot a deer or two with it, more flukes than anything had a laugh and sold it

I put a giant millet scope on the 300wsm because it looked cool, weighed almost the same as the rifle. Sniper rifle ya know

Now gone to a small diamondback 2-7 and shes taken deer out to 300 easy without a giant shit stain scope on it. awesome

I would have thought the dudes on Trademe who are flogging off their huge monster cannons would be top of the list. All excitement with the buy then realisation that it has limited practicality in the hunting world and is very expensive just sitting in the cabinet.Buying poor quality binos then saving like mad to buy the green ones. Pure joy. Then having continuing arguments with your mate who has the black ones.

Bino's are a great example. I'm sure the difference between a $1000 pair and a $4000 pair aren't measurable in the spectrum that human's can see in? So it becomes a posing contest quoting lab results that man nothing, just to justify the extra $3000 worth of "wank factor"

Yeah, there is a lot of wank factor in binos.

Top glass isn't any use if you don't know what you are looking for through them, and if you know what you are looking for I don't think the difference in cost between better than average and the most expensive is worth the marginal difference in performance.

The other "wanky" trend is this new notion of being a "professional". It seems that if you don't write for a magazine, or wear sponsor's products, appear in adverts or have the top ten of these people as your "friend" on face book you are no-one. Well, I'm no-one and pretty damned happy being it, thanks.

As far as buying something and then regretting it, I've got a lovely small ring mauser .257R in the gun safe that I will never use. It was an impulse buy. Lovely rifle but I will never use it. Its sitting with a couple of its best friends in the safe, all of them great rifles but all impulse buys. They aren't wanky, but maybe I am.

I particularly like how people set facebook pages about themselves hunting and call themselves "athletes"...

Bows are the wanky! 93.6% of bow hunters are cocky cunts who think they are better than rifle hunters.
