At what point do you call it a "new gun"

Hi All
I was given a brand new gun for my 21st birthday with scope / sling and case.
Here we are 15 years later and it has been dragged all around the country , high and low.
Now my dilemma is that it needs (I want) a new barrel as the old barrel is pitted and doesn't look good at all, It also could do with a new stock as the old one is also looking battered ....
I want to keep it as original as possible

After speaking to a couple of gunsmiths. it is cheaper to buy a new gun and have the new parts fitted to it....
I don't want a new gun for sentimental reasons...

The scope has been replaced already last year (the original one lasted well but eventually fogged due to me slipping on a river bed and landing on it)

If I replace the barrel and stock and scope... is it still the original gun with a few replacement parts??
Or is it just a new one with a couple of old parts??

Not sure if I just retire it and start again??

It will be just like my favourite axe, it's only had two new heads and five new handles.:thumbsup:

The way I see it is it would be just an old action that has sentimental attachements with new bits, if the stock isn't stuffed why replace it as you would be taking away its battle scars and some fond memories

2SK, if you buy a new chassis, body, motor and interior for your car but keep the old carburetor, spark plugs and dice hanging from the rear view mirror what do you really have?

My advice is retire it and buy another (are you allowed? ) rather than butcher your old faithful.

Show pics of it. The stock may be able to be cleaned up pull a few dents up with a iron give it a sand and new oil. Then just chuck on a new barrel

Perhaps get it reamed out to a new caliber and a bit of elbow grease into the stock.?

I used to work in a gun shop (owned by an idiot). Scores of awesome old trade-in rifles were dumped in a pile in the back store room. I cleaned a few up and sold them for $3-400 without doing much work. But one was special... An old Parker Hale 30-06 with great walnut and rosewood stock. After about 20 hours of work and maybe $100 in materials, I put this beautiful "new" rifle on the shelf with a price tag of $850. It sold the next day. I wish I'd paid the dork shop owner $50 for it and kept it for myself in hindsight. I had another beaut too...aBSA single shot .22, which was stupid to ever sell after refurbishing it. My point is, I reckon the action and stock is what makes any gun sentimental. Barrels, scopes/sights, recoil pads, magazines, slings etc can be replaced 10 times, but she's still the same pride and joy it always was. So my 2c advice Neckshot, either refurbish and love it or admit the affair is over and it's time to invest all your new $ and love in a new toy ;)

Shout yourself a new addition to the safe. If you want work on cleaning up the old one. The scars it has have been earned.

A heart transplant doesn't mean you are a different person. Just the same person, with a new life.

New stock, barrel, whatever. When you turn that bolt, all the old memories will come back. I would do the full monty on it.

I dont think there id enough meat in the barrel.the tip is only 12mm dia. Its pretty light weight.

new barrel, you could get it profiled the same as original.

stock, will it clean up? does it need cleaning up?

buy a new one to scratch your itch and put a new barrel on old faithful :)

buy a new gun and make some new memories, that way we dont have to listen to the "in my day sonny i shot 500 animals with that rifle

Holy shit most firearms I own are over 3 times the age of yours, my body's nearly 2 times as old and I ain't replacing nothing, put it away and pull it out in 30 years and smell the memories!:thumbsup:

Screw a new stainless barrel on it, good for another few decades! Keep the stock original, keep the memories intact 😊

got a mate who is on his 5th barrel on his ruger, he loves the gun and thats that.
stick a new pipe on it, then in 3 months replace the stock, so you are used to the barrel, think of it like getting a bypass then having a hip replaced.
it will cost about the same :D

Does anyone know if there is a way of getting a pic of the inside of the barrel??

The rifle still shoots straight . I can put two shots on a thumb nail at 100m while the barrel is cold . but the looking inside the barrel scares me.
It all started from 3 weeks in Fiordland without a cleaning kit. and then leaving it with a mate while I spent 4 years overseas...
Think I might keep the stock. its fine apart from it looks like its floated down a river for a week.

Nah they're cool. If it shoots well don't worry about it!!!

It's like putting a borescope down your rifle, never ever do it unless there's a problem, you'll just upset yourself.

To keep the memories, hang it up and get a new one is my vote. I've got a MkII 204, works good.

all that matters is it puts the bullets where you aim.

JB bore paste it, that will clean most, but if it shoots I wouldnt waste my time

Pass it on to someone you who you think would appreciate it and use it ... maybe a keen young buck who wants to get into hunting. They should consider it on permanent loan until they pass it onto the next chap. Keep the passion alive ...

just linseed oil the stock mate, if barrel shoots fine then leave it(maybe you could cold blue it), any luck sorting that odd miss fire?

Yip changed amo and haven't had a misfire scince. Got to admit it was strange that 3 different types of amo miss fire for me and have now changed again and all is good again ,after 2 boxes none misfired

if its miss fireing disassemble the bolt and give it a good clean
should be sweet after that, or the fireing pin might need a touch up on the tip by a gunsmith, clean it first tho

Done all that and had it to a gun smith a couple years back and was told it was fine.
